cJust wanted to say good luck tibbles!!! I Cannot add any more ideas than anyone else. When I lived on my own, I used to get a 3lb bag of potatoes, bread & eggs, I would have chip butties or egg butties/toast & scrambled/boiled egg/egg n chips, can you see a theme here :rotfl:For work ( I was only 17) I would take bread and butter and a bottle of tap water :rotfl: (I was really skinny back then):rotfl:

I had some peanut butter on toast for breakfast, brought a little tub of tomato and cheese pasta to uni for lunch with a banana and then made some scotch broth soup for dinner :D It was lovely, I've got loads of soup left too so that should do me for dinner the next couple of days. Only 4 days left until I have money again! :j

    Well done :)

Knock on 5 different neighbours' doors and say "I don't suppose you have a tin of beans I could borrow do you .... it's just I don't fancy going all the way to the shops to get some right now.... I'll bring you a tin back at the weekend when I go shopping"
    Thats fantastic inventive idea!

Also don't despair that your 2p won't buy you anything at all. Get your visit to Tesco at the right time and if you're lucky they could be selling off food going out of date that evening for that sort of money. If you can find another 8p down the back of the sofa you'll have more choice and could be able to get a loaf of bread to see you through or some other bargains to fit with your supplies.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

It has already been suggested you get in a few tins for the future.

Can I suggest a few things that would make life more interesting (if you like them of course).

Lidl do reasonably cheap herbs and spices. I think their mixed herbs are 39p. They also do some cheap mustard - whole grain is 49p. Both enable you to make basic foods more interesting. A packet of dried lentils isa about 90p. These can be turned into soup, cooked into curry (Dhal) to go with rice, made into rissoles (veggie meatballs), used to bulk out other things in pasta sauces, even made into the dreaded beanloaf. Lots of options from one ingredient.

They also do cheap tins of cooked beans that make a good emergency stand buy (about 28p).

If you buy a small bag of flour and a bag of sugar, you can make lots of sauces, bake puddings (crumbles and sponge-topped fruit are easy) and make dumplings to pad out soup or stews.
A bag of porridge oats is porridge, or combined with sugar, and fat you can make flapjack - add some peanut butter for interest. Also nice if you add a spoon or two added to the above crumble.

You mention Tesco. I do not know it but is there a sainsbos near Uni?

The 9p basics noodle pack is famous, although they now cost 10p. Cover with hot water and they are ready in 3 minutes. Use with stirfry or pasta sauces.
Their basic tinned kidney beans are even cheaper than Lidl - I think 19p.
They have a cheap instant custard - great for bananas and custard and with other puds. It only needs hot water, so you can make one quarter of a packet at a time.
They and Lidl have basic chocolate desserts to make with milk - again goes well with banana.
basics tea bags are 28p but I have not tried them.

Both sainsbos and tesco have very useful whoopsies in the evening when you can get some very cheap deals.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

    Hi there,

    Well due to being pretty hopeless at budgeting I unfortunately have all of 2 pence left to last me the next 5 days until my pay comes in :( Travel to and from uni isn't a problem as i have a prepaid bus pass but my big problem is food! This is where I'm hoping you wonderful people can come in, I've seen how creative and resourceful you all are and I'm hoping you might be able to give me some ideas of anything I can make with the stuff in my cupboard. Bear in mind I have 2p so i cant buy anything at all. This is what I have;

4 bananas- morning snack or maybe to go with lunch.Im odd I like banana sandwich but has to be eaten straight away.
150g strong cheddar cheese- cheese and cucumber sandwiches,
    1/2 a cucumber

    Flora light

1/2 jar black bean sauce-could try frying up red onions and potatoes adding sauce and serving with rice.

    1 pint semi skimmed milk
    1/2 loaf of white bread
2 brown rolls (frozen)- 1roll for lunch

    250g basmati rice

could try cod in chee topped with mash potato to make fish pie

400g wholewheat couscous- this be ideal in tub served with chopped red onions, cucumber for lunch but soak couscous with stockcube to add taste.

    1 sachet Ruskoline crumb dressing
400g penne pasta-with pasta sauce and grated cheese.

HP sauce- baked cod, homemade chips from potatoes/sunflower oil/

2 very large white onions-onion soup fry chopped onion in a little flora then add beef stock, herbs, salt and pepper if you have any with 2nd brown roll.

500g bag of red onions-cheese and red onion sandwich
    1kg potatoes
Jar of raspberry jam-onn toast or in sandwich
    Jar of peanut butter-on toast
    Jar of honey
    Jar of chicken gravy granules
    500ml sunflower oil
    Ground black pepper

2 sachets quaker oats so simple apple and blueberry flavour- breckfast or supper for 2meals.

1/2 sachet old el paso smoky BBQ fajita seasoning mix- could try spicey potato and onion served with rice.

250g Great Scot vegetable broth mix-add onions and potato to make another soup.

Chicken stock cubes- add veg to make another soup.
    Beef stock cubes-onion soup

    2 sachets tomato ketchup

I need to somehow make this stretch to 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches and 5 dinners.
I need to bring lunch to uni with me each day, any ideas? :o I've only got basic tupperware, no fancy flasks or anything. Thanks in advance for your help you lovely people! :p

Good luck. some student uniuons have hardship funds may be worth a try.

Any housemates or freinds who could lend you some additional food until you get some money?

  • Thanks for all the tips everyone :) I'm definetly going to make sure i have some versatile stuff stocked up in case this happens again! There is a debenhams near by and i actually went in the other day with the voucher, but they were insisting that i needed to spend over £5 to use it =( and since i have only 3p that is no use.
I did try that milk and more thing, but the link wont work for me, i just end up on some missing page. I've heard a few people saying that they were charged for the stuff too but just refunded - as ive got no money in my bank account that wouldn't be a good thing =/

Tomorrow I have a half day at uni so I'll be home for lunch. I think I might have my soup for lunch and then the rest of it for dinner. I'll be fed up with scotch broth by then :D Fish and chips on Thursday though - looking forward to that!
