Goods In Transit Insurance for private removal

Options
I'm hiring a van for the day and want to insure the contents while in transit.

Can anybody recommend a website or company that can offer this to a private individual like me?

I have tried the AA website and it assumes I work in a trade and want coverage for a year and want coverage for tools too. It's hopeless.

Or am I the only person on the planet ever to have wanted to insure my belongings while hiring a van and moving house?

Do you have any contents cover at present? If you do it might be worthwhile checking to see if it's already covered.
  • Ok I'll have a look into that, I'm doubtful though.

Most household contents products would cover you - the temporary removal of belongings section or the house removal section if there is one (often both though the second section often only covers removal by professionals though). Reallisticaly, is much likley to happen? I have moved 4 in the last few years and nothing was broken or missing.

If there is an accident and it is someone else's fault - you can recover the loss from them. Just leaves you to drive carefully!

The chances of anything happening are fairly slim I suppose but there is still a chance and when you've got £10k worth of stuff you need to move, I don't want to be taking any risks.

It's not so much things breaking I'm concerned about, it's more to cover for any problems that could arise e.g. leaky fuel pipe or electrical fault that could put the whole van up in flames etc. These things can and do unfortunately happen.

The chances of something happening if you do not know how to pack a van and pack boxes correctly is not as low as you think, however if you did manage to find a policy (I doubt you would), it is likely to have an excess of circa £250 and does not pay claims on a new for old basis. So on balance after paying a premium you would need to damage something fairly valuable to make it worth claiming.
