Anybody know about gas meters? This standard, apparently, enables usage monitoring.

The above standard refers to Electricity meters.

!!!!!!, I'll change the question then. Does anybody know of any (domestic) gas meter that allows connection to (domestic) equipment for gas usage monitoring? Cheers.

If you mean the gas equivalent, along the lines of the Owl type of device, then no they don't exist.
When 'Smart' metering comes in, your company fitted meter will log usage info for you and have some sort of in house display.
Until then you will just have to read your meter on a regular basis.

Thanks. I see that smart meters are being tested now. Is it months or years before we'll see them?

The official government start date was going to be 2012. I did hear that British Gas were going to jump the gun and install into about a million homes before mid 2011, but I've not heard if this is actually happening right now.

Firstly let me declare an interest and state I am not touting for business but I work for a company which supplies and fits devices to meters including gas meters to monitor consumption at commercial premises, University's, hospital's etc.

Most domestic gas meters can be retrofitted with a pulse sensor or an optical reader if a pulse sensor cannot be fitted. In either case the consumption can be measured.

The former requires an isolation relay to be fitted between the gas meter pulse sensor and the equipment doing the monitoring, both also require permission from the meter operator usually but not always National Grid.

For a commercial customer we charge about £500 for the pulse sensor or optical reader, isolation relay (if required), connection to a data monitoring device and authorisation communications with the meter operator. The actual monitoring device is extra as is the software required to display the consumption.

So you can see is not a cheap option, unlike an OWL or similar for electricity meters.

One little thing - you need the permission the the owners of the meters to do anything like this not to mention some one qualified to do so. so the gas supplier usually is the owner of the meter and a gas safe installer or metering engineer, oops you already said that - must remember not to post pre cafffiene in them morning
