and rarely makes the slightest bit of difference to a slow pc.

i would beg to differ i have met several people that have never defragged there computer there system has had plenty of ram processor power etc. when they have defragged there system becuase the info is not all over the place they have asked what has been done its like its back new when i first got it. so basic maintenance does count for something not always shoving in more and more ram to solve a problem is not the best cost effective soloution always. its like checking your startup see what you actually need not what its asking to opening up of stuff you very rarely use.

Can't access http://192.168.1.1/. Was able to access it yesterday from laptop so not sure whats happening there. How do i change wifi channels? Is that via these settings?

Just in the process of a defrag.

with regard to that sounds strange might be worth bunging in an ethernet cable from pc to router and try it again.
and yes once added in user and password should be in sub menus somewhere without having your router here to look into.
  • I am aware of how ridiculous this sounds, but how do i find out installed RAM?

    Commit charge:
    Total 482588 (keeps changing)
    Limit 558544
    Peak 543236

I am wary of using autoruns, it seems an awful lot of things to be unticking! Shall do those two on Hijack This after defrag has finished.

In terms of trying a wired connection, that is a bit tricky as our PC is about 7m away from phone socket - we used to use an extension but am aware this isn't a fantastic thing to do either!

ram is physical memory total on the same screen as commit charge, your figures suggest 256MB or lower, which will be part of the slow pc problem

basil, I've dealt with countless slow pc's, fragmentation is never the issue, and if you read my posts you will see I rarely suggest shoving more ram in as a starting point.

OP if you don't want to follow the autoruns suggestion, backup all data externally and reinstall windows using the recovery partition (probably F11 at boot if it's a HP), but it won't have any effect on your BB connection speed.

  • Physical memory 228848.

I'll be brave and follow the autoruns advice, I don't really want to reinstall windows again. I know its an old PC which is half the problem, maybe it's time to upgrade :D I just wanted to rule out the possibility of a virus, does it look clear to you?

Over to the talktalk forums I go!

backup to a usb drive using disk imaging software, then if anything goes wrong you can undo it.

age of pc isn't a problem, you have too many startup items for the amount of installed ram, once you get the peak commit charge below 228MB, it should run speedily again (but your slow internet is probably unconnected).
