hi could anyone help me with some info.
my mum is in reciept of DLA and has been since 2002.my dad works 30 hrs per week and recieves a small amount of working tax credits, should they be paying full rent and council tax??
my mother in law is also in reciept of the same benefit (DLA) and her hubby is retired, she hasnt had to pay a penny rent or ct since getting benefit and shes had other family members living in her house who work full time and this hasnt affected her housing and ct benefits in any way. HELP NEEDED thanks:(xx

DLA is not a means tested benefit, so is irrelevant to a HB award (apart from giving a small premium on your personal allowance). What rate of DLA does she receive, and how much does your dad earn including WTC? How much is the rent?Gone ... or have I?0

hi she gets high rate mob and low rate carers, dad earns £170pw and they get £48 pw tax cred there rent is £230.40 every 4 weeks and ct is £138 per month. tried an estimate site and it says entitled to benefits (quite a lot actually) but when i called up ben office they are still saying no but to check there own web site and see what it said. funnily enough it said the same as last one and they are entitled so im off to get some forms to fill in and take it from ther. thanks.xx0

Hi there, my husband gets high rate mobility and low care so we pay no council tax and very little rent even though my son and daughte who are both on very good salaries live here. It is not means tested and several other factors are taken into consideration when working out hb and ctb0

Can you clarify, your post implies that you believe HB and CTB are not means tested! You would be receiving HB and CTB on the basis of being on a low income. A non dependent deduction is not made from your benefits because you receive LRC.Gone ... or have I?0 -

Sorry about that I should have it made things clearer, what I meant was DLA is not means tested. Several other factors are looked at and taken into consideration when calculating hb and ctb just because someone gets dla does not mean they will also get hb. My son who lives here and works full time also gets high rate mobility to help him get to work and back.0 -
Am I right in saying that if a room in the house has been changed into a room specifically for someone with a disability, and only they use it, then they may be exempt from paying council tax?
Would that also depend on a particular level of DLA award? There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter0 -

I think the ruling is that if an extra bathroom or kitchen is needed due to disability, or if additional room is needed for someone who uses a wheelchair in the house, the amount payable is reduced. For example, we have a downstairs wetroom for my disabled son. We live in a band C property, but the amount payable (before any council tax benefit is taken off) is the same as a band B property.0 -

I get the band reduction because I need extra room to wheel around the house and we are reduced from band E to band D which saves a few hundred pounds a year.
One poster on here claimed to get it because she had a downstairs loo which is utter rubbish, it can only be claimed under certain very defined rules which even discounted my ensuite because my husband uses it (or either of the kids if they are in my room with me)0 -
