Are you absolutely sure this is genuine?. Anyone can produce business cards. This could be a really good scam if he has got hold of some of your post, calls to show you this and you hand over the 'fine'.

Why would the council official actually call at your house and not just send out a fixed penalty notice to you?

I agree it does sound a tad dodgy, but in this kind of case a home visit is often made.
    Gone ... or have I?

    I was wondering the same.

Surely for fines there should be some sort of paper trail.

I would ring your local council and ask about littering fines and what their procedure is.

I agree, at least call the council and check he actually works there and does make home visits. It would probably be better though to call the council and cancel the home visit in and make another appointment for you to go in to the office.

I don't want to worry you but paying a 'fine' could be the least of your worries.
  • From looking at other sites they normally call you in for an interview if they suspect you of littering. May I suggest you have a witness with you and record, if possible, all that is said. As Be Happy says, it sounds suspicious.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
  • I certainly wouldn't be letting anyone into my home. Go to the council and find out what is going on and go to your local post despatch office and ask them what is going on with your post delivery too.
My local postman has just lost his job. He was leaving parcels & mail all over the place and putting post in the wrong letter boxes.

I wonder how he would have reacted if you'd replied: "Brilliant, I've been looking for that all over the place, I've no idea where I LOST it - can I have it back please?" :D
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

I wouldn't attend for interview at all. You have no obligation to attend for interview, and you can only incriminate yourself by going. You can't say anything that will help you. There's no point giving them the evidence they want. Without speaking to you, they have nothing.
  • I made an error in my post, I did not mean they should attend a council interview. I also meant that when the visitor calls have someone else there etc. Don't pay anyting there and then. Must learn to post clearer.
