I respectfully disagree. On that logic 'those people' would be Network Rail. It's neither FGW nor Arriva's 'fault'.

And you are completely allowed to disagree, I was not advising you anyhow, but the OP.

Network rail are not at fault if the delay was caused at a STATION to which it sounds as though that's what the OP has been told.

I would advise the OP to contact Arriva Trains Wales as they are much more likely to offer vouchers than FGW

and this is where you are wrong as they have bought and travelled exclusivly with FGW who is the sole entitly that they should be dealing with as they were the travel provider. And it is therefore them who they should contact to claim a refund

    Incorrect.

The train would have not been operated by First Great western, and would have been by Arriva Trains Wales, therefore the delay lays with them and not the station operator.

Therefore the link is incorrect and the correct one is:

    www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk
The train that the OP was travelling on was being operated by First Great Western.

OP had an agreement for FGW to transport him from A to B. They failed.

Please be kind enough to explain why OP should be interested in the failure of one of FGW's suppliers to perform.

    BTW... your link doesn't work.

    What??

    Firstly, OP was told...

Not really a station, is it?

Secondly, Network Rail are responsible for the infrastructure.
    From their homepage...
Network Rail owns and operates Britain’s rail infrastructure.

Please dont let the facts get in the way of a good old MSE persons ill-informed rant.

I must admit I was going to complain to first great western. Our tickets and therefore contracts were with them. The train staff would have given us complaints forms for them had they not run out.

Has anyone had the cost of a hotel paid? If we had managed to get on the coach the earliest we would have arrived with our hosts would have been at least 2.45 am but we didn't get the coach and they weren't offering taxis. They weren't offering anything -apart from the non alcoholic contents of the buffet car. The train manager (who was receiving instructions from control in Swindon) was being given less information about how long the delays might last than we found on the National Rail website.

We got the impression that no-one really knew what to do with us. They were just hoping that we would carry on being British and not complaining, although they did get some police in just in case someone started getting uppity.

i have to disagree with you,the TOC you travelled with are the ones to complain to.no matter who or what caused the delay/cancellation it will be FGW the OP claims off.
As it was cable theft FGW will then put a claim in against NR as ultimately it is down to them to protect the infrastructure.
As it goes i work for FGW and friday was a very bad day with points problems and poor railhead conditions also causing delays throughout the network,i seem to remember someone mentioning a broken down freight inside severn tunnel.

We are told that some swine had stolen cables so I am not sure if this is classed as an event beyond the railway companies control so they will try and wrangle out of paying compensation. I have done a quick google search and it would appear that cable theft is quite common in South Wales so they should be doing more to protect their property.

It's incredibly common around Newport and the Severn Tunnel. Either stolen cables or a simple good old-fashioned arson of a signal box, seemingly every other week. It's lots of fun for the daily train commuters who live in the area!

Sorry you had such a hassle :(
