The first book I ever bought and was recommended to buy was The Dr Hessayon Grow your own Veg. To save you lobbing out loads on books -cos there are loads have a look at your local library first to see which ones you get along with
Don't be scared of the weeds- I don't know anyone who inherits a "going" allotment.
On the plus side if you clear a small patch now you can plant some onion sets garlic, broad beans, (great for putting nitrogen back into the soil) and some spring cabbage. Dont feel you have to do all of these but its good for the soul to put something back in whilst your busy ripping everything else out.
Any questions I'll do my best to help out.

Thank you so much Sparkle, I've been to the library and got a couple of books so that will keep me busy for now. That and the weeding of course:rotfl::rotfl:

That's me done for the day, I've been on my sax, given the dog a brush, washed the kitchen floor and de-cluttered the kitchen and the living room table. Wifey is getting on with tea now, then I'm off to work.

Hi ladies!
Hex and dusty - must be a black Monday kinda thing - I've had to take the day off after being quite unwell last night. I still had to get up at 6.15 though to ring in sick by 7am, and then set work and email it in.
I've spent most of the day curled up on the sofa, reading and knitting, with the occasional foray into MSE - I've been catching up with the various Memory Girl threads.
Flying? Mmmm... I dried a load of towels, and washed up after lunch. That's it.
OH has been working on the laminate flooring, closely supervised by DD so he doesn't forget hat he's been doing and wash the car. It's been known to happen.
Back to work tomorrow, so I'll catch up with the housework on Friday.
Mollina and sockdrawer I've had an allotment for 20 years now. I'll be very happy to help if you like. I'm green with envy over a walled garden. Wow. Mollina, I'd be inclined to measure off a strip, clear that, and plant garlic and broad beans, then measure out another strip and so on.
Each time you go, start by hoeing or weeding the already cleared patch first. This may seem like a waste of time, but the knack of managing an allotment is keeping the weeds under control.
Decide if you want to treat it like a traditional allotment, field style, or divide up into beds. I have mine divided across the plot with Mypex paths in between. The beds are five foot wide, and the paths two foot. They are not raised beds, as that would be very expensive, but digging in compost or manure over the years will raise them gradually anyway. I find it motivating, as I can weed the beds in an hour or so, or dig them in about three-four hours.
I have four for fruit, one flowers, one half beans and half strawberries, and the remaining eight are vegetable. I pair the veg beds up for crop rotation -
two for potatoes, two for early veg followed by overwintering, two main summer, and two which start the year with the overwintering, and then are planted with late summer (eg tomatioes, squash, sweetcorn). It's not a traditional crop rotation, but I wanted to maximise the use of the ground. It is never too late to become what you were always intended to be0 -

Thank you Serena, another allotment holder here - still a newbie really with an odd plot which we are gradually changing.
Lovely dogrose on a totally too thin arch was inherited and the arch has broken so am gradually cutting that back whilst trying to sort a more substantial replacement. Its next to a plum tree (which needs pruning down hugely next spring as its way too high) where nothing much else will grow - it lifts my spirits when I see it so it'll stay in some shape or form. Otherwise this year was a bit of a disaster with illness, weather and all - but hey ho next season is a new one, and a bit of hard work will get it all going again.. Veg beds are similar in mine but we have central path due to chicken wire around the perimeter cos of the rabbits - but smaller beds make everything more manageable.
OK - tonights small list
Small person to bed early
