    When i was a child we used to feed the rabbit on a Thursday and our father would ask us to eat it on a Sunday, sorry but i could not , will not ,cannot get past it being Snowy, our pet on the plate.

    This is a wild rabbit not a pet. The beef, lamb, chicken and pork we eat are not wild ;)

    I like rabbit, but have had one in the freezer for a while because 6 year old DD didn't want to eat it. Finally this week she agreed to try it - I am delighted to say that not only did it feed 3 adults and one child 2 different meals, but she ate it and enjoyed it.

    Day 1 - took some of the flesh of the bone and minced it with some belly pork - was going to do burgers - but changed my mind and made meatballs (daughter's favorite ;) ) with tomato sauce and linguine.

    Day 2 - I put the rest of the bunny carcass in the stockpot - did the stock thing, strained it and reduced it and added some cream. Sweated some leeks and onion and garlic, added some grain mustard, remaining meat picked off of bone and the stock/ cream and served with rice. Lovely - and another clean plate from DD.

    I think it was 3 or 4 quid. It's about to become a more regular feature in our diet. I'm delighted that my daughter came round.

    I would rather eat a "happy" fluffy bunny which has been shot locally than a "value" chicken from the supermarket, which has had a short hellish, unnatural life and been fed and pumped full of who knows what. Don't want to get on my soapbox, but for those of us who choose to eat meat I can't understand the it's "ok to eat a pig but not a sweet bunny" line of thought.

    A lot of people say they can't afford free range chicken - give some free range bunny a go! ;)

    Here in Spain, rabbit is a regular item on the menu. All the supermarkets sell them as well as the butchers. Most of them are 'farmed' I believe rather than shot. When I was little we used to keep rabbits for the pot and I used to help granny skin and gut them, but I couldn't do it now.
  • well just to let you guys know... that my bunny didnt turn up :mad:

    the guy let the butcher down and didnt bring any in .......and i after all the reciepes etc on here i was looking forward to trying one out..

    so will see if my butcher gets them in later on....


    but by the sounds of it they are good value.....plus as you say its one of the most naturally reared animals you can buy.... along with lamb..... everything else is commercially reared..

    so i am looking forward to my venison now...... as that is from the country park about 15 - 20 miles away...... and they cull this time of the year..... to keep the flock/herd under control.. and in good shape...

    Spotted a butcher with rabbit today (only £2.50!), and i'm going to casserole it i think. Does anyone know a recipie i can use some dry sherry that is lurking in the cupboard in, or can i just use it instead of the wine generally?

  • ive just ordered 4 wild ones from my butcher, they are £2.50 each and come fresh not frozen. This was the second butcher i phoned, the first wanted £4.50 each and they had been frozen previously!

    ooh forgot to say i love it in a flemish beer stew, i think delia has a recipie.
