Using ordinary flour in breadmaker?

I wondered how many of you used ordinary plain flour in your breadmakers and is it just as successful at the strong bread flour? I think it may be the strong flour that is causing my stomach problems and may switch the flour Im using.

Strong flour just has more gluten, which will make your dough more extensible and stretchy. You can use plain flour (and in fact sometimes I use half strong and half plain), but you may not get the same bread texture as before. Whatever you use it will still taste much better than any shop bought stuff, so don't worry. ;)

Me too, I think I used bread flour when I first got the breadmaker but once I finished the bag I switched to Smartprice flour. Big difference in price!

  • hmmmmmm when I tried it my bread came out small, hard and stodgy. It didn't cut properly and we ended up putting it in the bin.

I usually substitute about 1/4 - 1/3 of the strong flour with plain wholewheat flour, that hasn't made a difference in rising or texture.

I may have to try again as so many people are having success.

  • Do you need to use more yeast or anything? Vit c? (My 500 gram loaf in the panasonic takes 1 tsp of yeast)

Are you sure it's not the yeast causing your problems? We've always found strong bread flour is the best for making bread and it's pretty cheap from shops such as Lidl!

I think its more likely to be the flour than the yeast. Ive got a recipe for gluten free bread that I will try this week. Then I'll know if it is the strong flour or not!
  • Hi Guys,

Absolutely brassic until Sat and have run out of bread flour for my bread making machine!
Can other flours be used? If so - which ones?

    Thanks!

I know a few people on here have used plain flour and have reported quite good results, so that might be worth a try if you've got some plain flour?
Back after a very long break!
  • Might give that a go!
We were kindly given a breadmaker (BNIB) from freegle, so i've been experimenting.

I'm not the worlds greatest cook - do I need to change the recipe at all if using plain instead of bread? Or just let it run its course?
