Have you got any toys that DS played with at a similar age? I found a case full of stuff in the loft a while back and these much loved toys will be re-wrapped for DS3 this Christmas ... and if DS1 and DS2 remember them I shall say, 'yes, isn't Santa clever, he knew you had one just like that and really loved it' .... call me mean but my house is full-to-burstin and I spend half my life selling stuff on Ebay only for more to appear on birthdays and Christmas!!!!

I genuinely believe that as long as children get played with it doesn't matter what they get for Christmas. I have convinced DS1 and DS2 (8 and 6) that we are not writing Christmas lists for Santa this year; they can just jot down a few 'ideas'.

Otherwise what stuff will you be needing for her in the 3 months or so afterwards? A highchair (if you would have been buying one anyway) would bulk up her pile in the siblings eyes

My daughter was 5 months old last Christmas and we got her a Learn and Groove for £5 from ebay and let her play with the wrapping paper from other people's gifts. It was plenty - everyone else spoiled her rotten in any case.

Do you have the things she'll grow into that your DS has grown out of? If so, wrap those. Chances are your DS won't remember and if he does you can always tell him that Santa takes grown-out-of toys and recycles them.

  • A ball - My babies love balls. Will spend all day crawling after it.
Also you could make your own treasure basket. Children 6month till about 18months+ love them. http://www.netmums.com/things/Treasure_baskets.1950/ Mine LOVE THIS!
  • The usborne touchy feely books are on offer in Tesco at the moment - a box of 3 for £7. My LO (9 months) LOVES them! You could buy these and wrap each one up separately.

These toys are all current favourites with my LO:

Again I wouldnt have thought a 3 yr old would have any interest in how big his sisters pile of presents would be. If your baby is 6 months, could you not get something for the garden to put away or from a 1yr+ to put away for when shes older. When my youngest (now nearly 7) had her first christmas we got her 2 things, and the my other 2 who were 3 1/2 and 8 didnt have anything to say about what she has gotten.

If your daughter likes her brothers diggers she may like one of these http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3495306.htm
  • A 3 year old won't be the slightest bit interested in the babies toys when he has his own presents.

But what lesson are you trying to teach him anyway? That both children will always be treated in an identical way? That's not realistic, (and you don't sound like a mum whose going to be playing favourites, which is clearly wrong) and it can cause trouble later. Kids need to learn that sometimes things go their way, sometimes their siblings way. Otherwise you'll end up like a mum I know whose kids are so competitive with each other that she has to count the chips out on to their plates so they get exactly the same number!

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

Honestly, the OP just wanted some ideas for toys, not a parenting lecture.

    'that's not my' books.

    A bead wire.

A wooden walker with blocks in it.

    A shape sorter.

Wooden jigsaws with handles on them aren't particularly expensive.

    Pyjamas

    Bath toys

    a ball pit

bowl, spoon and cup with pictures on

    pram toy
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
