Xmas presents for 6 mth old DD

Evening all,

I am hoping for some help, I have a DS 3 and a DD 6 mths. I have managed to get a nice pile of presents for DS from various sales :money:. However DD only has 3 things I am fully aware that 6 mth old children have no idea that it is Xmas and do not care what they recieve. But I would like to get her a few more bits to make her pile look similar in size to DS, I don't want him thinking he gets more than her ( I have seen this happen in other families).

I will be getting her some clothes but wanted some ideas of toys which maybe suitable, I will then look at sourcing them in sales or second hand :money:.

I should say that DD is crawling and currently likes to get hold of her brothers diggers :rotfl:not sure how much longer I am going to be able to convince DS that this is a good thing!!

Thanks

  • Why not look for some story books that your daughter can enjoy when she is a bit older? I started to read to my children when they were very young and they all still love their books (now age 19, 12 and 10). Board books and bath books will be handy in the next few months as well, as your baby will be able to start handling them.

You could also get a couple of framed pictures for her room, a money box for future savings, or a towel that is just for her use.
  • Thank you Kingfisher, I hadn't thought about books as we have loads of story ones for DS however we don't have the baby ones, DS was a very sicky baby so his had to be thrown away. I will start having a look round for some.

The other ideas are lovely as well, she is being christened in December so I already feel the rush of money boxes and picture frames coming. DS has at least 6 money boxes. I know its the thought that counts its just I am fed up having them everywhere!!! Lol

  • You could always tell people that you have let your daughter have one of the moneyboxes given to your son, so that more don't find their way into your home. Maybe you could also think about a rug for your daughter's room, or a lava lamp (£4.99 in Home Bargains) - they usually fascinate children, even as young as your daughter. Other ideas are things like girly shelves or storage boxes, bath toys, CDs of nursery rhymes (I've seen a few in the pound shops recently). You could ask a relative for a CD player for her room, so that your daughter can listen to them if you spend any time up there - and of course, your son would benefit as well, so he would feel as though he is sharing his sister's belongings, as she tries to share his!

My DD will be 6 months at xmas, and DD1 will be 2 1/2. As you say, DD1 has loads of presents but it is much trickier for younger ones, especially when they will be able to play with allDD1's toys too eventually (ie we have a sandpit, toy kitchen, huge box of brio, hundreds of books etc so wouldn't want to get more when the time comes, so cut's down options a little iyswim) so what I have decided is to think of the future. I am getting her a load of duplo as DD1 has some, this will add to the set and give DD2 bargaining power when she is older :D It no longer will be DD1's toy but makes it into a shared toy so when they are bigger they can play together. She is also getting bath toy's as she is a proper little water baby, and this:

I know they don't care what they get, and this is a moneysaving site, but I want to get her a similar amount to DD1 more for us than her.

I've always bought slightly advanced age ranges for my kids when they were little so for the 6 months old I'd buy 9 months things. That was they can grow with it. My DD2 was 8 months her first xmas. I got her some 'That's not my....' Usbourne touchy feely books, Weebles castle with people, Fisher Price Little People Zoo (lots of nice animals to chew on!) I think the Little People range is really good. Also a Fisher Price laugh and learn my pretty purse, great for putting things in and the getting them out. My DD loved 'sorting things out'.

I think if you buy toys that have lights and/or make sounds for her age you're onto a winner!

One thing I got both my girls ages one was Mega Blocks, my 5 yr old still builds with hers now. They're nice and chunky, colourful and as your child grows they play with them in new ways. Maybe you could think of that or her birthday.

Have you got a walker from your DS that you'll re-use? We have a walker that doubles as a buggy for dolls so even now that my daughter is fully walking she still uses it as a buggy - 2 toys in 1! :money:

If he asks all you have to do is say to him that because she is only a little baby she doesn't need many presents, but when she is older she'll get more like him. I really can't imagine a 3 year old would compare the piles and come to the conclusion that he is more important or will always get more.

I would say it is better to give her a few things that she will actually be stimulated by, rather than to wrap up things like clothes that will be of no interest to her and call them a present.

My niece is going to be a six months old at xmas time. I bought her Octopals bath toy and a Soothe and glow seahorse.

Each to their own though. Babies honestly don't care what they get, we all agree on that, but I love christmas and I love christmas shopping and choosing good quality toy's for my girls that I know will last them as long as they need them and still be good to pass on. I don't like buying tat for buyings sake but IMO as long as I'm not getting into debt to do it then I see no harm. I know others do it differently but I want to be exactly even with my girls, as thats how my mum was with us, to the penny!
