As far as i know, if you havent acknowledged this debt in the last 6 years and there is no CCJ, the debt will be statute barred, so you will not have to pay it.
Have you sent any payment, or admitted to owning this debt at all within the last 6 years?.
There is a prove it letter you can send, i'll try and find a link for you..

            Hi Blueboy,
As long as you have not acknowledged or paid anything towards the debt in the last 6 years (5 in Scotland), then the debt is indeed statute barred and you don't have to pay it if you don't want to, so Geebee was spot on.
You may be better sending the prove it letter though in the first instance. I've attached it below, but don't sign your normal signature as the nice people at the debt collection agency have been known to copy signatures.1 High Street,

 Dear Sir/Madam
 Ref: xxxxxxxxxxx
You have contacted us regarding the account with the above reference number, which you claim is owed by ourselves.
We would point out that we have no knowledge of any such debt being owed to The Loan Company.
We are familiar with the ‘Office of Fair Trading Debt Collection Guidance’ which states that it is unfair to send demands for payment to an individual when it is uncertain that they are the debtor in question.
We would also point out that the OFT say under the Guidance that it is unfair to pursue third parties for payment when they are not liable. In not ceasing collection activity whilst investigating a reasonably queried or disputed debt you are using deceptive/and or unfair methods.
Furthermore, ignoring and/or disregarding claims that debts have been settled or are disputed and continuing to make unjustified demands for payment amounts to physical/psychological harassment.
We would ask that no further contact be made concerning the above accounts unless you can provide evidence as to our liability for the debt in question.
We await your written confirmation that this matter is now closed. Otherwise we will have no option but to make a complaint to the trading standards department and consider informing the OFT of your actions.
We look forward to your reply.
Yours faithfullyIf you've nothing decent to say, perhaps you shouldn't say anything.

The Department of Work & Pensions (DWP) can chase debts after 6 years without going to court. They reclaim the overpayments by deducting them from current (or future) benefits such as pensions.

Sadly I think that the DWP can claim money owed after this long. If you are unwilling to pay it will remain as money owed and claimed from any future benefit you may claim. Firstly you need to ask for an explanation as to how they came to this amount.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
