audio suddely died on desktop - help

Hi
my hitherto OK desktop has suddenly stopped having any audio at all! Please help!
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

    reboot, check volume slider, mute, and cables, or do a system restore.

    try a reinstall of the drivers perhaps.

    Check in device manager to see if there are problems with soundcard.

    Check in you "Sound" in the control panel to make sure an updated driver or something has not changed your output from (for example) a soundcard to a USB sound source.

    I find occasionally that it will update and reset my default sound output to my USB soundcard which is connected to my recording studio microphone.
