You could try putting an ad on Gumtree, either for a skills swap or just under wanted. I was lucky enough to pick up basic stuff from my mum but the rest has just been trial and error - I'm quite small so always have to take things up. If you've got some stuff that you're not too worried about keeping then it might be worth just playing around with it and seeing how you get on. It often looks tricker than it is. Good luck!

    Hello everyone.

Hope im allowed to do this on here :)

I have given up in finding a course/lessons for sewing. I posted on "the sewing forum" and I had a thought. Is there anyone out there in the Dewsbury area, or surrounding areas who knows how to sew and use sewing machines who would like to teach it? I thought that maybe a church or a local communinty centre would be an ideal venue place, helping the church out too. there must be someone, or someone who knows someone who would do this :D Please dont let this skill die!!!

Think the only way to do this will be set up a group yourself. It's a great idea but the thing is these days the only way to get what you need is to do it, as no-one else will.

What about a general craft group and hope that someone who is good on a machine joins you? Can you offer expertise on something else? like cross stitch, tapestry, knitting, weaving etc? Shame you don't live near me :) we could have a group of two:)

have you rung round shops that sell sewing machines, in your area? as usually the staff know of places, or sometimes even run courses themselves

Have done a quick google, and a place called Fabworks is coming up, as being a supplier for groups, so maybe ask there

also have you tried other online sewing places, like The Sewing Forum or Angel Yarns, as you may find there are people already on there, who have such groups going, as they dont tend to advertise, its more word of mouth

Hi brownhandbag, thanks for your reply, would be a great idea to get together, but youre right, ya a lil too far away...! Ha. Thanks for your idea, ive thought about that, will have a word with my local church and see what they think about holding a craft night or something like that. :) I dont have any skill as such, i dabble in x stitch around xmas time, but i wouldnt say im an expert, i can knit, but again, only the very very basic stitch, so i dont think i could personally set up a group for me to teach, unless its for lil kids! ha.

Flea27 - thank you so much for taking the time to look for me, that is lovely :) ive not heard of that Fabworks, its right near where i live too. Will give them a call, see if they know anyone who teaches, or any courses running. Ive tried the college a few times this year, and each time, nobody seemed to know what was happening, one time a course was just finishing and they had not booked another course in, so didnt try them for a while. I must say, they are not the most helpful of ppl at that college, ive rang a few times for courses and they just sound like they really dont care, it doesnt give a very good impression! the courses there are only like 10 wk short courses which would be great for me, just to familiarise myself with a machine and have a go on it. I did ring again on Mon, and got through to a lovely woman, it must have been a good day (!) and she told me to ring her end of Aug to check the new timetable. Im just itching to get started so im trying to find something before then. :)

Flea27, i have just spoken to fabworks, what a lovely, lovely man he was! unfortunately, only open mon - fri, 9-4, so probably wont be able to go in and see them for a while, but they seem to have good variety of stock, and dont really advertise. So, if anyone from dewsbury area, try them out! He told me to try the college, he agreed they are not very helpful! and he mentioned a place in Leeds called Stocks, ive heard of this place before, but trying to find something more local, and these guys only do courses during the day : (

theres a course at normanton freestone high school, its evenings that ive been looking at £60, for 10 weekly lessons not sure how competative that is as its the only class ive seen, im interested but due to give birth oct and classes start sept so migth end up missing a bunch of them. my mum is quke skilled she used to work as a seamstress but she has tried to teach me in the past (as a teen when i couldnt be bothered to listen) and now wont teach me.

£60 is the going rate for a ten week course

however, most places that run these short courses, have several sessions over the year, so youll prob find they have another one starting in January, and another in May

Tbh sewing and being pg dont go that well together, as sitting at a machine is quite uncomfortable, espec towards the end. Being due in October, you will only get a few weeks of the course too, before baby arrives. Prob best to give it a miss until baby is here, and you have more free-time to be able to get out the house
