With almost all bike's it's a really straight forward job to remove the front wheel, brake calliper and then drop the fork stanchion (the shiny chrome bit) through the yokes. Then take the one offending fork to the dealer, should be no more that £40 all in.
    Wot he said!

Don't forget to renew the fork oil. Do some googling to find the recommended viscosity for your bike. Trust me, I know fork oil :)

Fork seals can fail when you hit a pot hole and the forks bottom out, though it is much more likely that, as has been said already, the forks have pitting on them which can blow seals after only a few miles, when I was a courier we just used to let them leak, you could then use the oily mess as a kind of bravery marker.

Though if the OP is based in London then £125 to have your forkseals replaced isn't actually that expensive, as unless you strip it down yourself and turn up with a fork in your hand there is a lot of labour to be expended to get the offending part out.

very few workshops would want to replace just one side, so the price may well be for both sides.

At no-oneknows me, a fork seal can blow at any time, so there is no way that it could be proved that it was leaking when MOTed.

And a fork seal isn't a major part of a big, it is a small component on a large an important part of the bike.

And can be though of like a tyre, was fine when MOTed, but got punctured just after it left the MOT station.

At the OP, make sure you check the slider for pitting, depending on make it may be worth finding a set of good secondhand forks and fitting as a complete unit.

One reason I loved my old GT550, fork gaiters, not sexy, but cheaper than pitted forks.
