It's causing quite some chaos according to the traffic reports on the radio there are now tailbacks of about 4 miles (all the way to the Tyne bridge), and motorists are double queuing in the running lane of the road trying to force their way into the queue who are waiting.
Traffic reports are now reporting total gridlock on all roads south out of Gateshead.
You have to question how much money people really saved if they were at the back of that half mile queue? Fuel keeping the car ticking over, clutch usage, etc, etc - on an hourly rate it probably worked out at the minimum wage..0
