I wanna sell stuff on ebay

Hey Tiggy

Have a look at Etsy.com and Folksy.com. They're specifically aimed at sellers of hand made items and I know a few people who shop there.

Regarding rules and business registering and accounts and stuff - I wonder in reality how many people selling bits and bobs on the internet do it by the book??

Why not?
Any address can be registered as a business address.

There are probably lots of people selling online who aren't registered as businesses who should be, the internet is the easiest place for HMRC to check who is registered and who isn't as it is so easy to trace people.

You can pay for a rented business address that is a full geographic address; this may be what they mean. However, you may not be able to run a business from your house if it is rented as this will have an impact on insurance - check with your landlord.

Perhaps Soo knows more about this than I do.

Whether you can run a business from a rented house will be in the tenancy agreement, speak to the landlord-agent as that is often a clause to stop people from running a business that will cause a nuisance or mean a change of use, such as car repairs or opening a cafe in the kitchen. Selling a few home made craft items on item may not count.

Thanks so much for all your advice! I've been in touch with letting agent and he's saying I must not run a business from my house even if it would not alter the house in any way or involve customers coming to the house at all. Sooo, I've been wondering about registering the business from my Mums address? I'd need to check with her obviously and as she's on certain benefits ftc and wtc not sure if this would affect those.

I don't think it would but even if you register your business with her you would still be running it from your house, so be careful.

Personally I wouldn't have enquired and just gone ahead as no customers would be coming to the house. The chances are they wouldn't have known anyway if they had you could have played dumb and said you thought the bit in the lease referred to running a shop IRL not an ebay business. The problem is you have now highlighted the issue so couldn't do that now. Sometimes Honesty isn't the best policy. Just my opinion.

That would be none of the landlords concern. Imagine, it would be as if a landlord could tell you what job you could have.
I would still go ahead if I was you. How are they going to know?
There would be no problem using your mum's address as she will not be receiving any payment, but it would be a bit clumsy.
