I wanna sell stuff on ebay

Hi all, just after a quick bit of advice really. I was thinking about making a few crafty bits and pieces and trying to sell them on ebay. Do I need to register as a business to do this? I've looked at their rules and it seems to say I do as I am intending to make a profit but surely everybody that sells things on ebay aren't registered businesses??
I've probably missed something on the site that would explain it perfectly but was hoping one of you clever people might be able to explain?
I don't want to break the law of course but dont want to go to all the trouble of registering myself as a business just to sell a few bits and pieces.

I think (not 100% sure) it all depends how much you turn over a month, if only a few ££ then I think you don't have too.

I am sure someone will either come along shortly and agree or shoot me down, either way hope you manage to get it sorted and start selling

generally private sellers sell old bits that they simply don't use anymore!

if you are making items, then they are new items that you are making to gain a profit.. so yes, you would be running a business... I am not up to date on new tax laws but I am sure there'll be someone else along soon to inform you!

Sorry but your incorrect if you are buying to sell or making something to sell you need to register as a business both with ebay and the HMRC.

AS Cyberbob says there is no exemption just because ti isn't very much.

OP you need to register with HMRC and also have a business account with ebay. Each year you then do a very simple set of accounts and submit to HMRC with your tax return . If you have other income there may be a little tax to pay, if you have unused allowances though then you may well not have to pay tax.

What's going on with the swear filter why does it not like account? Is it the lack of a second c that sets it off? acount? Soo what were you trying to spell? I'm intrigued as I can't repeat it?

Cyberbob, it is my dodgy fingers again , I put my letters in the wrong place..have corrected now.

It often takes me several attempts to type what my brain tells me to.

Thanks eveeryone, my house is rented so I'm not allowed to register it as a business address. Think I'd better start thinking of some new ways to make money! xx

Tiggy you can have a PO box registered as a business address too. I know ebay quite well and that's allowable.
