Need help on a pay n go phone

Options
Hi all,
I've bought a pay n go orange san francisco phone from an orange shop in sheffield. I started using it straight away but when I talk on the headphones neither I nor the other person can hear clearly... obviously there's something wrong. However I still gave it a week to make sure it was not a temporary problem. Also there was a contacts list problem..i have to copy each contact individually from sim and will take me forever to copy 300 contacts...
Anyways when i called customer services they told me i can get an exchange or refund within 28 days of buying it but when i took it to the shop, the manager was abrupt and very intimidating. Kept tellin me he's not changing his decision and can't comment on why the customer services told me I can get a refund. However he dnt even offer me an exchange. Also said if i am not happy with the phone i can leave it there and he'll send it back to the factory but i'll never get to see it again. When asked for an explaination to such a comment he threatened to call the security on me or leave!

Now I need to know what rights do I have as a cusumer if I cannot use a phone literally and the company wouldnt refund it?
Please advice me on whatever laws we have that will help me in this situation.....
Thanks
Jazz

How long ago did you buy the phone?

Either way, if it's not working correctly then it's perfectly within your right for a refund or exchange (depending on how long ago you bought it).

Regarding the problems with the phone itself, have you tried different headphones to see if it corrects the problem? That should help identify whether it's a problem with the actual phone or just the headphones. If it is just the headphones then that would hopefully save you having to send the phone back.
You should be able to import all of your contacts by going to contacts, then pressing the "Menu" button, then "Import/Export", then select "Import from SIM card".
That's what I had to do on my SF and all of my contacts were imported.

I'd be tempted to make a complaint about the manager of the Orange shop, especially if it transpires that you are within your right for a refund or exchange (which I'm sure you will be).

Just to make a minor point that may explain some of the confusion.
Headphones - listen to music on the phone
Headset - headphones with a microphone that allow you to make/receive phone calls.
