Halifax change of address nightmare

I'd like some advice please my daughter has had an halifax account for years and needs to change her address but the bank won't do it .This has been going on for 12 months now.
She had her passport stolen and the bank are insisting they need it to change her address . She took the letter from the police stating it had been stolen but as she doesn't have a driving licence either they won't change it.
She banks online and downloaded the change of address form but they still didn't change it she rang and they said they must see her passport in branch to change it. She explained the situation and they just said no way could they / would they change it with no passport or driving licence.
Most worrying thing is they still send everything to her old address as they aren't allowed to not send it as as far as they are concerned that's her address . Any advice would be most welcome.

She should just be able to do it with her current account card.

There's more to this story. If your daughter contacts Telephone Banking (01133 809 574) they can change her address provided she passes the relevant security. If they are referring her to branch, then either a) she or someone else has failed security, b) they have a security concern or c) she is under 16 and cannot use Telephone Banking*. If she calls Halifax and asks, they will provide her with an acceptable list of ID (passport and driving licence are not the only two).

*If she's under 18 a Birth Certificate (for example) is acceptable ID.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

I recently changed my address with Halifax using nothing other than my debit card. I was briefly quizzed on some of the account details (old address, when the account was opened, what the usage history was like), but after that they made the change immediately.

I can recommend your daughter trying this if she hasn't already.

That seems very lax indeed and I would be worried if my bank did this.

Change of address is one of the biggest fraud tactics going.

I work for Santander and in order to change an address of an account in branch we need:

    1) Proof of account ownership (card, statement, passbook)

    and

    2) Valid UK Passport/ UK Drivers License registered at new address

OR a combination of other forms of ID e.g. Birth certificate, utility bill, letter from HMRC etc registered at the new address where applicable.

So if I move house, don't have a passport, and take a couple of weeks getting my driving licence updated (and DVLA hold on to it for 3 further weeks) you guys are quite happy to carry on sending statements to my old address?

    Shocking.

I was mildly surprised, especially as Santander had just told me their requirements (not as stringent as those you listed, although I haven't been back to do the deed yet). I was pleased that it wasn't any more difficult.

Lloyds TSB weren't any stricter than Halifax.
  • The branch should able to change address for her-the process is very easy-takes about 5 minutes on customer data base-ask your daughter to go to the branch and speak to manager.

Yes ..... but you (and I) would have a re-direction in place. Would we not. :p

So it all becomes a bit academic. However - bit more to this than meets the eye.

No, like I said below the bit you just cut out, utility bill etc at the new address would be fine.
