    why those two?

    james

There are so many to choose from it difficult to narrow down. I've had a canon digital camera before (many, many years ago) and liked it. So past expereinces mean something. As for the Sony, I recall many years ago my dad having some binoculars with Carl Zeiss lenses in and they were very good - the Sony uses those make of lens.

Furthermore I've been to the usual review sites

Is there a problem with either of those two makes then ?

It will probably all come down to my wife's choice in what one she finds comfortable to hold.

Yup - the Sony is £140 from Pixmania and the Canon a little more at £153 from amazon..

My neighbour works for Jessops, so I'm off to chat with him and see what deal he can get me

The sonys are boasting a high ISO, so low light should be better. Also the Zeiss lens is a great benefit

Jstallan - please could you PM me when you've spoken to your pal? I'd owe you one of course!

Also, no reason to doubt those two brands at all. I was just wondering on what basis you'd narrowed it down to them

    Thanks again

  • Try the Panasonic FX9, gorgeous camera :)
If you want good quality pics and good (great) zoom, not to bothered about size, the Minolta Z10 is great too.

Don't buy from Pixmania though
Have you seen the reviews on pricerunner?

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have a Nikon Coolpix L2 and I love it. Brilliant camera, plenty features etc, good quality for printing, runs on AAs but just get a quick charger and you're fine. Takes little movies too. Price has come down quite a bit too, you could get one for around £140 or less if you shop around and get a discount code or something. Pick up a compact tripod for it and you're set.

    Hi all
I've been thinking and haved to add the following requirements:

Good zoom (I'm taking it to Australia to Watch Cricket so not all photos will be close up)

    Compact (I like compact things!)

    Many thanks again

  • We took a Canon Powershot G6 on our trip to OZ last winter - compact and gave brilliant results without having to carry around loads of lenses!!

Spoke to my neighbour and he didn't think Jessops would price match on the Canon. They currently have it for £199-£219 (depending on what day you look at their site!). The Sony might be a different story. Although he doubted they would match the Pixmania price, he reckons they should drop to the £140s range..

Anyway, it's not my choice, but the wife's. She uses it most and it all depends what she feels happy holding. Me - I'm stuck between the two. I like the Sony 'cos of the battery life and it slightly bigger (I got fat hands ;-)), but I've already got some SD cards that will fit the Canon..

And now I notice that Amazon are doing the Canon Powershot A530 for under £100
