Unless you would like to spend a few more days on the problem, perhaps you should clean up your Malware problem and then run LSPFix as I suggested....

I thought long and hard before replying too....
And it's a credit to your character that you did! I thought you made a fair point on that thread, to which I will respond when I have cleared the backlog of work caused by having no broadband at home.
If I have not thanked you for the LSP-fix advice it is only because Windows Mobile 5 won't let me. I ran it from an SD card at it came up with
mswsock.dll (Tcpip), winrnr.dll (NYDS), wshbth.dll (Bluetooth Namespace) and rsvpsp.dll (Protocol handler). However I have not removed them as it is unclear from the instructions whether all the results should be removed.

Perhaps you can post a Hijack This log when you have the time, as it looks as if you have some entries that need to be modified.

Once you have eliminated modification by Malware as contributing factor, you can move on to the modem itself.

I wasn't aware that you had additional problems. Certainly your first priority should be to clean that PC before worrying about the modem. Use it on one of the other machines you mentioned to download malwarebytes and probably combofix and hijackthis assuming whoever is helping you with that has requested those. As it is essentially read only it can't have been infected.

I don't ever bother with virus fixing on my own machines - mainlly because I've only had one infection and that was down to my own stupidity but also because I've always maintained decent backups so all I did on that occasion was restore.

This is a reply to #12 − I can't get the quote button to work.

It is to this end that I am trying to get reconnected. As Combofix prepares to run,
it pops up with "This machine does not have the Ms Windows Recovery Console installed.
Alternatively, an existing installation or the Recovery Console may be present but requires updating.
Without it, Combofix shall not attempt the fixing of some serious infections.
Click 'yes' to have Combofix download it.
NOTE: this requires an active internet connection."

Can I use the original XP back-up disc from when I bought the PC (new) instead of downloading recovery console?

My GPRS connection today has been the slowest I have ever known, but I'll be able to use the library PC tomorrow (Monday), probably between 1245 and 1545.

Is there another thread in which you were requested to run ComboFix?

    That's going to be a 10MB download!! :D
Perhaps the problem is not in need of a sledgehammer at this stage.

It is probable that you can remove the problem affecting the connection manually with HijackThis. Only 1.4MB.

Whilst you are at the library, you may as well save Malwarebytes' AntiMalware along with the latest rules.

(NB I now know how to suspend Avast.)
My Combo download was only 3.7MB, and on this thread it is only 1.4MB. Confused!

ComboFix plus Recovery Console is 10MB. HijackThis is 1.4MB.

Yes, you should be able to install Recovery Console from the disc.

I can see that you have parts of a Rogue Dialler still on your system.

Do you have a link for the first one, please? I can't find it on file hippo and can only find the guide on bleeping computer.
My library session ends at 18.50 BTW.

Wasn't a problem, this PC has never been near a landline.

    Have done this.

There’s a log of a Hijack This scan I did on 17 Oct on #39 here, but I’ll do another one and post it tomorrow. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2780940
along with the answers to your other two questions.

I’m genuinely sorry that you have been banned. I only hope my public criticism of you (Donnie?) didn’t contribute to it. If you want to converse, you can register and PM me on my main forum here.

We have a tiny techie section there on which I’m sure you’d be very welcome. In terms of strictness, it’s at the opposite end of the scale to this site, i.e. anything goes: I can guarantee you won’t get banned!
