Renault Scenic

Options
Am looking to buy a Renault Scenic, about 04/05 year.
Have heard a lot of terrible things about them, although I really can't help liking them!
Has anyone had any good experiences with them?

What have you heard that's bad with them?

My dad has one and it has been solid - He does Coventry to Exeter twice every week (His brother is dying).

Plus i used to work for a subsidary of the AA and only dealt with one scenic and the fault was the owners own doing - food in the card reader slot

  • Thanks for that - although sorry to hear about your uncle.
Scenics seem to have a lot of electrical problems - dashboard, handbrake, windows - and problems that keep recurring/are difficult to solve. In fact people seem to think that French cars in general are not very good. Would be interested to hear otherwise!

Thanks for you're kind words. Asbestos is the culprit of his cancer. Years and years as a roofer and now only a few months left

you've prob heard German is better but it's a myth. all cars have problems. My best mate bought a 09 Golf GTI brand new and after driving 2 miles up the road the gearbox jammed and needed repalcing. just go with your gut feeling hun

Like i say when i worked in partnership with the AA i only ever attended one scenic and that wasn't even a fault with the car.

My dad's has been solid and never faulted once. Renaults in the old days suffered with reliability issues but this day and age they've vastly improved. I like Renaults and have no ambition to change just yet

  • I have a scenic. Had it a year, and most things (touchwood) that have gone wrong with it are wear and tear except for the boot handle that has come out and apparently a common fault (mine is 02).Get it checked out really well first and should be fine.

So all of the Renault tales of horror are just the imagination of owners then?

I recall one Renault owner with a Clio breaking down at 650 miles from new.

    Show me the horrors?

It hasn't been stated they are the best make out there but each to their own and all that..

If you read what i said i actually said that all car MFS have their faults, no one company is better than the others.

My family have had Renaults for years, R12, R9, R5 (twice), R14, R19, R21, R25 and more recently Clio and Modus.

They have their probems, more usually to do with electricals and automatic gearboxes, though they have a habit of going through clutiches and drivershafts.

The reputation stems from what some percieve as quality, a Renault interior may start to rattle a bit, the keyless entry system had it's faults as did the tyre pressure monitor.

My wifes Clio DCi is obviously built down to a price with hard plastics etc.

But it was good value and the only issue has been the fuse attached to the battery blowing when a mechanic didn't disconnect the battery when an oil change was done to preserve the warranty.

There are problems with the Espace aswell, the city of london police had one and used to get the engine replaced every year by Renault uk, mainly due to them thrashing it from cold all the time.

If you fancy a Megane Scenic then get one, they are good looking and comfortable, and well priced, just avoid all the gimmicky options.

I used a R21 as a minicab/courier car years ago and did over 200k, though the gearbox was on the way out and it had a clutch and driveshafts at 150k.

But it was comfy and basically reliable.

Horses for courses, just check it out before you buy as they do have inherent faults, just because somebody on an internet forum has been lucky with theirs don't think they are trouble free, though I would have one, they are comfy and cheap to buy.
  • the in-laws used to have one. the seats are really hard...

    Yawn.

I worked for a subsidary of the AA for a while. There are worse MFS out their i can assure you.

Faults and issues that existed 10 years ago have been adapted and changed and Renault are not as bad as most think.

My Renault Sport Clio 197 has had 0 problems but maybe because it's built from a seperate division
