I thought that too obtain a classic car insurance policy you also had to have a main car with a normal insurance policy, or have things changed?

No you don't need to with all companies
No reliance should be placed on the above.

Must say, when I called Footman this year for my insurance, they defiantly asked me if I was insured for another car, and my friend who ONLY drives a 28 year old BMW (1.4 I think, and he is 39 Y.O.) cant get his insurance (classic or otherwise) for less than £500, while I have had Westfields and 911's for less than £200 (but having a 'normal' car insured too).

  • fronting is where the car is registered with the dvla in your name, but the insurance policy is in mum or dads name and your named driver. the insurers will have an issue of ownership. and beleive you to be decieving them by fronting your mum or dad as owner on the insurance policy. or vice versa, the policy has to be in the name of registered keeper.

    Completely wrong.

Feel like I am teaching my granny to suck eggs, but.. fronting is when a lower risk person is used as the proposer in order to lower the quote for the higher risk person. Often but not exclusively this proposer will not have an insurable interest in the vehicle. A policy is USUALLY in the name of the registered keeper, however not the case in all policies. In order to insure a vehicle you only need to have an insurable interest.
  • The cheap insurance and free tax was part of the reason I got a Morris Minor as my first car - and have carried on owning Minors ever since!

Younger drivers can normally get a classic policy through the owners clubs for the various car makes, they often have agreements with the insurance companies. My Morris Minor is insured for unlimited mileage, business use and is driveway parked, and currently with Footman James insurance. I do have access to a slightly more modern car now (my husband's car is a mere 17 years old) but I'd been insured on a Minor only for several years, so there's no need to have a modern car as well.

When buying my (first) car I knew about this but had no success. Although I very nearly bought a 2CV, Morris Minor or an old mini just because they're awesome. :p Having said that I still think the 2CV gave me the lowest quotes humanly possible.
And I ended up buying a 'modern' ish Hyundai. :D

Most insurers wont take classic cars for under 25's - Footman *may*, but it depends on the car etc.

Plus you've got the draconian mileage limit...
