The only difference is the sort code and branch address. Which is what I want. I like to keep the sort code seperate then I can quickly see on my card which account is for where.

I try to do most of my banking online. I just want to have the branch location near to where I am. But my residence is a different place.

Regardless of where your 'branch address' is, you can use any branch in the country.

The 'branch address' that shows up on my statements is for a branch in Hampshire. But if I went into a branch of the same bank in Aberdeen (or wrote them a letter) then I'd get exactly the same service as if I went into my 'home branch'.

In short, it makes no difference where your account is based. Just open it, either online or at any branch, and you can still use it anywhere.

    Thanks for that

It was just that i have a joint account with my GF for houshold / food expenses. I wanted a different sort code on the debit card so that I cant quickly spend from that account. I sometimes make mistakes when I am tired.

Memorise that the last 2 digits of the joint account no e.g. 12 and then your personal one as 34 - this should help you distinguish easily if you want them at the same branch.

Surely it's simpler to write a J on the end of the signature strip of the joint card, and an S on the single card.

That way you don't have to associate '1234' with joint and '5678' with singe.
  • Hi there

I opened my account online and got the 40-02-00 sort code aswell. It must just be the standard code for people that apply online.

I would rather have one at my local branch, but it doesn't really matter.
