The Toshiba. The rest are just cheap rubbish and the MSI is a Netbook.
Though if you want a webcam, go for the Toshiba Satellite C650-1CR at £304.
Oh I see that the CR has sold out for now.0 -
Donnie the MSI is a Netbook.
Thats why it has no drive is it???? The specs are all double dutch to me :eek:The solving of a problem lies in finding the solvers.0 -

It is going to be used for surfing ebay facebook + playing online games Windows live things like that not downloading films and music but I would like the best I could afford as I doubt very much if i will buy another one. it will be used mainly by the wife. I have been looking at ebay and Desktops seem to be cheap with not bad specs (I think) but the missus wants a laptop always has. I am not computer literate and don't understand any of the specs. the desktop I was looking at the specs are:
Processor Type: Intel Pentium 4, Processor Speed: 3.0GHz - 3.4GHz Features: Graphics Card, Network Card, Windows XP Operating System, USBMemory (RAM): 2 GB, Chip Type: Intel Pentium 4, Hard Drive: 500GB Capacity, Primary Drive: DVD-ROM, Antivirus with lifetime updates. The solving of a problem lies in finding the solvers.0 -
The specs are not as important to you as reliability and longevity, as almost any modern laptop will have adequate specification.
The eMachines(not no.1) and the ACER(same company) will have good specification for the money, but I cannot vouch for the build quality and reliability.
You might be lucky and it may last for years. I have no idea. Perhaps you can go into a shop in order to get your hands on one before deciding.
I use Toshiba and my girlfriend, ACER. Her laptop is more than three years old. Your mileage may vary, as build quality can change over time.0 -
I'd go for the Toshiba all day long
As said the MSI is a netbook and is tiny, I have one (Dell) and find it extremely handy at times but couldn't use it on a full time basis
The ACER / Emachines are cheap tat and i wouldn't touch them with a 10ft barge pole
I fully understand PC specs as i build them in my spare time (Gaming machines) but for your budget it'll be hard to recommend an ample system.
Sorry i can't help any more.If Adam and Eve were created first
.Does that mean we are all inbred0 -
My wife had an e-Machines laptop. It was utterly reliable for 2 years and then one day, quite suddenly, it went "kaput". As I repair PCs / Laptops she asked me to have a look at it - I ran some diagnostics (using some specialist hardware tools) and it transpired that the motherboard had failed. In this day and age it is just not worth replacing motherboards (outside of warranty) so she bought a new Toshiba Satellite instead. I was impressed by the build quality of this machine.
I have a Medion E1210 Netbook (an identical unit to the MSI Wind). This is now 2 years 3 months old and has been reliable except for the fact that the internals of the earphone socket have become loose over time which means I have to jiggle the jack-plug occasionaly. As I use a headset a lot for language study this is a bit of a nuisance but in the context of the price paid (£279 new) is probably not unreasonable "wear & tear".
I still have a 15 year old Toshiba and 16 year old Dell laptops - both of which are still in perfect working order. Sadly, their usefulness in this day and age is a bit limited - although I managed to set up Wi-Fi on the Dell and so it does get used for web browsing and e-Mailing occasionally.
Ultimately the choice of which to buy is largely governed by your intended use. Looking at the Specifications you provided the Toshiba represents the best overall value for money (IMHO) and should meet your computing needs for the future. In previous times (back in 95 / 96 / 97 ) the keyboards seemed to be a bit of a weak spot on Toshiba laptops although they were easy and cheap(ish) to replace. However I have not encountered any such problems with a Toshiba since then and, as I have mentioned, my wife uses a Toahsiba Satellite on a daily basis.
So, for what my two cents is worth - go for the Toshiba.
I hope this is of some interest.

In that case, non of the above. No consumer grade laptop you can buy other than Macbook Pro has the ability to last more than a couple of years without the hinges going or the mainboard failing or some other issues.
Recently I've sold several unopened box ex-CPW clearance stock Toshiba Tecra A10-156s for £400. These are a business class laptop that RRPs at just under £1000. They're built like tanks. Another favourite of mine are IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T61. Again built like a tank and go on for years but they're far from light, not very pretty as IBM hasn't changed the design for 17 years but they're about as robust as you're going to get. Going Dell route, there's the Latitude range however in the last couple of years build quality has gone down the pan - virtually every one I've had thats 2 years old has had hinge problems but 9/10 its just been the screws that've worked loose.0
