Out of date beer

Went to Netto today treated myself to 5 bottles of Adnams beer 500ml not bad £1 a bottle the same price as they have always been at this Netto.
When i got home the sell by date on the bottles were 15th Aug 10
Is this right and where do i stand. I would have thought the store would have had to tell me that the beer was past it's sell by date before i purchased.

If you take it back I am sure they will refund it. But why bother? Try the first - does it taste off? If not, shrug, drink the rest and check the dates next time if you want to be fussy. If it does taste a bit funny drink it anyway and try a second one - the second through fifth will probably taste fine after the first one has gone down.

Beer is fine for years after any silly date written on the label.

Is it Best Before or Use By date. If it is Best Before which I have seen on other beer then they have done nothing wrong because I believe there is no legal obligation to not sell a product past it's Best Before date.

I go actively HUNTING for out of date beer as there is nothing wrong with it and it is so much cheaper!

I find that too terryw but this has been £1 a bottle for quite some time now. I usualy go to home bargains where they sell bottled beers from as little as 99p a bottle but was at the other side of town today.
  • i used to work in a off licence where the staff could buy out of date beer for 5p a can. Happy Days :-)

If anything is past it's sell by date it is ok to sell it but the retailer must clearly sign the goods out of date - if they did not do this they have broken the law.

The beer however may be fine but the retailer must give you the information.

He already said it was best before, NOT sell by.

Not true at all! Beer does go off. Many beers in the UK are full of preservatives giving it a longer sell by date , especially in comparison to German Beers where it is illegal to put in preservatives and any thing other than hops and yeast and water
WILL NOT GO OFF AS FAST AS MILK AND AN ENDED EXPIRATION DATE, BUT IN THE PAST i HAVE THROWN BEER OUT WHICH WAS WELL OVER ITS DATE
