Problems with IE - need help!

Hi,

I'm having problems with my internet explorer.

I was previously with AOL (big mistake), but have recently joined sky to take advantage of their free internet. Previous my wireless aol worked fine on my sony vaio laptop.

Since the switch over i've had problems getting online. The wireless router is working fine as my girlfriend is on it on her mac and i can connect on my phone. When i connect on my laptop it appears the connection is excellent; however when i open up internet explorer i get the 'cannot display this site' page.

When i connect the ethernet it works fine and after i then disconnect the cable and go wireless my outlook emails still work, but IE doesnt. So i know my laptop is receiving the connection. (my emails dont work wirelessly until i have connected the ethernet, then disconnected)

I have therefore assumed it's my IE options that are faulty. So i went into a local computer shop and the guys there suggested resetting lan settings through internet options; that didnt work. They then said to tick the 'automatically detect settings' box, again in internet options. This also didnt work.

I am therefore well and trully stuck. I'm sick of sitting on the floor at home with the bl00dy ethernet cable plugged in!

any suggestions would help.

many thanks

Mark

If u have a third-party firewall on this machine then try (temporarily ) disabling too.

If you've recently run the Microsoft updates, or have automatic updates enabled, they might have caused the problem. I had the same on an XP machine and ended up that neither Firefox nor IE would connect. I ended up doing a clean install of XP because of other reasons, but not after I had done a system restore and removed the update KB2360131, which seemed to give me connectivity back. Look through your recent update history and see if that is there from the time the problem started. If it is, consider a system restore to just before that was applied if you can.
Strangely enough, I have now run all updates since doing a full re-install and the computer works. Thanks Microsoft!

Also try, temporarily I mean, knocking the wireless encryption off -- and see what happens then.

What I mean is; remove the encryption for test purposes only -- and let's see if the Internet works after.

Just an idea, and I'm probably wrong!

Have used Vaios and the wireless connection switch at the front of the PC can inadvertently be pushed to off postion without realising.

I've done it myself and wondered what was wrong with the internet, not realising what I'd done.

    Just a thought.

    Good luck
