Bambam wrote:Penny, even if mum and dad can't help out financially, they may be able to help out with advice. We too thought everything was ok with our son, infact the most infuriating thing was that he didn't come clean in one fell swoop, so to speak. When everything did come out we felt sad that he'd been carrying this enormous problem around with no idea of how to sort it. You will feel a huge surge of relief when its all out in the open. My son has just asked me to tell you to move back home sooner rather than later so you can concentrate on getting your life back on track. Good luck for the weekend - take the bull by the horns, as they say. Will be thinking about you. Take care.
Thank you for being so supportive and thank your son.
I will let you know how its goes with my mum and dad

Hi Penny
I was in about the same amount of debt as you are in and renting a room from a friend who had her own flat. I moved back to my parents house about a month before I signed a Protected Trust Deed (Scottish equivelent of an IVA) without my parents knowledge. It wasn't until I found this site and with the encouragement from people on here that I managed to pluck up the courage to tell my parents about the severity of my debt. I was so scared and my parents hit the roof because I had hidden it from them for so long, but now they are totally supportive and I now wish I had told them sooner. I also feel so much better for telling them as hiding it was making my physically ill.
I had to close my bank account and open a basic bank account last year, I now have a Natwest Step account it has no cheque book or overdraft facitlity but has Standing Order and Direct Debit facilities. It also comes with a Solo card
I hope this is of some help
Good luck telling your parents

Can I change this - thinks CAN improve and things WILL improve IF you take control and help yourself.
Too much unqualified reassurance support, hugging etc. Things don't just get better on their own. Good luck.0 -
No they don't. I TOTALLY agree with you.BUT....She sounds as though she IS taking control and a bit of support NEVER hurt anybody. Honest.barnaby-bear wrote:Can I change this - thinks CAN improve and things WILL improve IF you take control and help yourself.

just in case
i got confused at first and i applied for a normal current account but with NO credit facilities - they do a credit check anyway
you need to make sure you ask for the BASIC BANK ACCOUNT - If you know the name of it for whichever bank, then that will help! They won't do a full credit check, only verify that you are who you say you are!
Lloyds tried to sell me a current account - i told them I wanted a CASHACCOUNT so thats what I got!
Bingo :j
good luck by the way xxProud to be dealing with my debts

But that's what we do... support! That goes from reassurance, hugs etc through to practical advice about money and everything else. Sometimes when you feel low the best thing someone can say is 'it will be ok' - because it doesn't feel like that at the time. No, of course it won't magically get better on its own, but penny is here getting advice and has already spoken to payplan and made all sorts of arrangements. A bit of positivity never hurt anyone!
Penny, how are you getting on with that basic bank account? xDon't stress, relax, let life roll off your backs. Except for death and paying taxes, everything in life is only for now... Avenue QOfficial DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 003

Hi :hello:
Can you phone the council up and let them know you are having problems with the council tax. Explain to them that you are in the process of sorting yourself out and getting yourself a basic bank account. Maybe being upfront about the situation will help rather than them guessing or thinking you just don't want to pay. I'm saying this because I have heard council tax is an important debt.
Anyway the advice seems to be to get a basic bank account as a first step.
Good Luck - we'll be here with you every step of the way - the goodtimes and the notquitesogoodtimes.
