    Hi Penny,

Pay a visit to CAB. They will help you with a financial statement and offers to creditors. It is important to prioritise your debts. Council Tax is a priority and along with rent, fuel, and water charges, should be paid before bank loans and credit cards.

As mentioned earlier when you apply to a bank ask to open a BASIC account, not a standard one. Explain that you have debt problems and want to pay your wages in and have no overdraft or credit facilities.

Don't despair, there are thousands like you, but the sooner you act, the better.

Thanks for your advice every account I have asked for is without the credit facilities, so don't understand why there are turning me down, I need this bank account so payplan can start making payment to my creditors.

    Its a nightmare

Hey, come on Penny, cheer up. Your situation might seem bad at the moment, but it is 'sortable.' My son came back home in June with a debt of over £18000 - unpaid bills, council tax, phone, bank charges, utilities, rent etc. After eventually revealing the extent of his debt, we sat down together to work a way through the mess. His dad and I paid over £3000 for unpaid rent to prevent a county court judgement being registered against him. We thought this was important. After that I contacted the council and agreed a weekly payment (he's paid weekly). He pays most of his wages on clearing his credit card and he has just opened another account and transferred the balance with a very low interest rate. He owed almost £3000 on his mobile phone and he has again agreed a weekly payment for this. All his utilities are now paid. The thing is don't bury your head in the sand, face up to your debts and contact the companies you owe money to. You may have to grovel a bit. At the end of the day they want their money so if you can come to an arrangement with them thats great. Some of the companies my son owes money to wanted more, but if you haven't got it they can't have it. When I explained the situation - take him to court but you won't get any more out of him - they were helpful. Whatever arrangement you do come to STICK WITH IT, because I'm sure they will pounce if you miss any payments. I set up my son's account for internet banking and that way I don't have to keep trundling to the bank.

Penny it has to be said that at the moment his life isn't his own. I have charge of all his 'plastic' (a bit like Martin's Bank of Mum and Dad on TV - thanks Martin!!) He gets a certain amount each week for petrol and pocket money. I'm also in the process of taking his bank through the small claims court to get back his bank charges, which I am confident we will win. This money will go towards settling his debts. He will only be debt free in about 18 months. Its an uphill struggle for him. We don't charge him any board at home and he does get angry at times when he can't do the things he's used to, but when I ask him if he wants to control his own finances, he backs down when he realises that at the end of the day I am only trying to help him get back on his feet.

Have you told your parents of your situation? If not they might be more understanding than you think! Good luck Penny - there is a light at the end of the tunnel, you know! :money:

Penny, even if mum and dad can't help out financially, they may be able to help out with advice. We too thought everything was ok with our son, infact the most infuriating thing was that he didn't come clean in one fell swoop, so to speak. When everything did come out we felt sad that he'd been carrying this enormous problem around with no idea of how to sort it. You will feel a huge surge of relief when its all out in the open. My son has just asked me to tell you to move back home sooner rather than later so you can concentrate on getting your life back on track. Good luck for the weekend - take the bull by the horns, as they say. Will be thinking about you. Take care.
