Freezing without heating on all night

Hi

Just recently moved to a rented flat with my 2 yr old, it's freezing at night for him, unless the central heatings on all night even then it's barely comfortable. Does anyone have a rough idea of how much it would cost to run central heating all night? Or any suggestions to try to retain the heat. It's a maisonette that doesn't appear to be well insulated. Thank you for any advice.

You already know the answer here - it'll cost a lot. Have you tried all the obvious stuff like thicker duvets, hot water bottles, etc?

You will have to find the gas meter and check the running costs but my central heating uses more gas in the first 1 1/2 hours then most of the remaining day so keeping it on 24/7 would be more expensive but not that much more.

You can also keep it on lower setting.

But each system and property vary so you need to record the readings remember though different outside temps will effect the amount of gas you use so check over afew days or weeks.

Have you checked if the windows are drafty (even double glazed units if not set up correctly can let air in when shut) all you need is a draft excluder a couple of pounds in wilkos.

    Gas or Elec heating?

  • Thank you for the replies, it's gas central heating supplied by British gas. Will be getting some draft excluders. Can't really use a hot water bottle for him as it's not safe for his age.

If you do go for putting the heating on - see if you can turn off/down the radiators in the other rooms.
There's no point paying to heat the living room if you are in bed.

Why not just read your meter to find out what it actually costs? Far more reliable than asking on a web forum.

What do you mean by 'freezing'? The ideal temp for a bedroom is 16-18 degrees.
  • also BG for gas costs are one of the dearer co's to be supplied by, but all above advice good, particularly re insulation, with the property being rented tho if you are eligible for free insulation, would be best to check with the landlord
