How do I get gas supplied? (I have a pre-paid meter)
The house I bought a few months ago has a pre-payment gas meter. Can anyone tell me how to get the gas turned on? Who should I call? Or does it depend on which gas supplier I choose to go with? If so, which is the best supplier when one has a pre-payment meter? I'm in Dorset. I have no previous experience of pre-paid meters!
Thanks,
A

The supplier will be whoever the previous occupant was with. You should contact the supplier to give them your details so that they set you up as the new account holder. You can then change suppliers if you want to. Try the energy comparison sites to find out who is the cheapest.0

You will also need to supplier to issue you with a gas card. DOnt use any card left behind as that will not credit your account.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Thanks - but how can I determine who the previous supplier was? I am unable to contact the previous occupant to find out.

http://www.xoserve.com/help_info.asp or call 0870 6081524 they will be able to provide you with the meter point reference no (mprn) and you can check the meter itself to confirm the meter serial no (msn), they will also be able to tell you who the supplier is, also in respect of getting gas uncapped, if you are a tenant then your landlord will and should sort this out for you0

If in your tenancy agreement, you pay for utilities, you will need to register an account so your payments and bills are handled.
As others say, get your own payment card or you will be paying the previous tenant if the landlord or others handed you one.

Great - thanks. I discovered that there is already gas on tap. All I had to do was flip the main lever! Obviously the previous owner didn't use up all the gas he had last paid for before he moved out, over a year ago. I called 0870 6081524 and the she-robot said that British Gas Trading Ltd is the supplier. I assume that isnce it's a pre-paid meter, there is no standing charge, or that it's factored into the prepayment, yes? Anyone know if British Gas is a good supplier to be with on a prepayment meter?

PS - I just did an online comparison and it looks like Ebico would cost me about half what British Gas would cost! Like BG, they don;t have a standing charge for prepaid meters either...

British Gas I believe are one of the more expensive companies for gas charges. This is because they used to have amonopoly on gas supply. Once the market was opened up, the original company were not allowed to undercut their competitors. At least I think this is the case unless anyone else corrects me!0

glad it was useful Ally1205. If you do change to ebico, it will take 4-6 weeks but be assured there is no standing charge with bg ppm gas rates0
