dog unwell after booster

I took my dog to the vet today for his booster. He was fine before he went but tonight seems unwell. He's lethargic and looks miserable, and refused his food tonight which is a first.

He's lying around now and his back legs are trembling slightly.

I've looked online and this seems like quite a common reaction to vaccinations, but he was fine after his last one a year ago.

I'll take him back first thing tomorrow if he's not back to normal in the morning, but has anyone experienced this reaction in their dogs?

He's two and a half.

Vaccinations in dogs can be like vaccinations in humans. People can have their annual flu jabs every year and be fine, yet feel under the weather one particular year.

You'll just have to get in touch with your vet. I personally would be reluctant to comment on whether this is common or not simply due to the fact that none of us know.

My dog was subdued after his vaccination but fine the next day. I would just wait until tomorrow. He was also ok after his first one, just not this one.

It's not an unusual reaction to being injected with a load of (poisonous) stuff he doesn't need but sadly the UK's research on dog vaccinations is still in the dark (profit) ages.

He'll be fine tomorrow but continue your internet research on the effects of dog boosters!

    Thanks Tropez, minimad and paradigm.

He's slept for the past few hours but I'm just going to wake him up now and take him for a little walk round the block.

I've seen so much adverse opinion online tonight about boosters. I wish I'd seen it before I paid £33 to make my dog ill.

I've always had boosters done on the vet's advice but this will be the last one my dogs will have.

I hope you're right paradigm, that he'll be ok tomorrow.

Minimad, how old was your dog when he had his reaction to the booster? I've read that younger dogs are often more likely to have a bad reaction.

It's a risk either way, booster or no booster. Feeling sorry for self and sleepy is not unusual, back legs trembling is one I've not heard of and sounds unusual to me.

I am probably going to get shot down in flames here...........

You CAN get the dogs titre tested every year through a blood test to see if they actually NEED a booster vaccination. I did a lot of research into vaccinosis in dogs and cats, because I had a cat who was diagnosed with vaccinosis due to having yearly boosters.

When I first suggested it to my vet, he thought I was mad after all the blood test costs as much as the booster so why on earth would I want the extra cost. That was until the blood test came back :D The dog in question was getting on a bit but needed no more boosters pretty much for the rest of his life because his immunity to those specific diseases was complete.

Recently I have had a case of a kitten with panleukopenia at 15 weeks, almost unheard of in this day and age. But what the vet said to me is that they are seeing parvo in the rise in the vaccinated population and just like any virus it has mutated over the last 20 years until now only partial immunity is being given despite yearly boosters. Naturally they feed this back to the drug companies and so changes will be made, but it all makes you wonder about yearly boosters.

I hope your dog feels better soon - having had a puppy and a kitten vaccinated for the first time recently I noticed that both of them were very quiet and grumpy (totally out of character) for 24 hours after.

  • Walking in the park with my friend today and he said his 6 year old boxer dog was exactly the same after his booster last week! He is normally fine but went all lethargic with trembly legs this time - good news that he is back to his normal self now.

    All the best x

There are enough threads on here already discussing boosters so I won't start another here.... do a search ;)
