It would be nice to know the EXACT diferences between the expensive oils and the cheaper oils and have the opinion of say a VW engine designer to comment on whether actually the cheaper oil would be absolutely fine with perhaps a shorter service interval.
I'm not happy with a service interval of more than year / 10,000 anyway. And shorter than that is preferable. I just changed my oil on the corsa(petrol) after 6 months/6000miles cost me £15 (inc filter)0 -

You're doing well. It's £460 for 205 litres here, even on offer it's £50 for 20 litres.
Even the 10/40 semi is £8 for 5 litres of the VX branded stuff.

I know loads of people and companies that reverted to the old 10k interval, though that may be down to not wanting the vehicle to go uninspected for to many miles, they were all Private Hire and courier companies that did it. Though they might just not want to stock too many kinds of oil.
I actually find maintaining my car, and fettling it to be theraputic, it is a nice change to service my car beyond the minimum requirements.
I think the long change intervals are really only a benefit to the fleet market, my Mondeo has 12.5 k intervals as standard, and the first owner kept to these religously, though they also did most of their miles on dual carraigeways giong from Peterbrough to Norfolk. I just do it every 6000, that way if I am too busy I can delay one without any harm being done.0 -
