Having a different card will not make any difference whatsoever, credit card company still have to honour payment....

Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't. It depends on the system that the merchant is on. Some have a system which allows them to "refresh" the details in the event of a decline because of an invalid card so they can continue the CPA. Some don't. Certainly I've cancelled a card (for other reasons) to find that some CPAs survived and some didn't.

It is a 'continuous payment authority' that has been set up. This is a payment system similar to direct debit and standing order to pay subscriptions, except that there is no legal standing.

There is always legal standing for a consumer and CC companies are duty bound to treat customers fairly.

Continuous payment authority - Similar to direct debit but set up on a card, with no signed agreements. Company controls amount debited, frequency and timing. Can not be cancelled by the customer or the bank. Company controls everything.

The CC companies love to have people believe there is nothing the CC can do about CPAs.

It is perfectly true that the transaction is initiated by the merchant and then processed by the credit card company.

But two alternatives here. 1) Did the OP really authorise a CPA? This is how it has been implemented. But if it wasn't clear that this was the case when the OP signed up, then further billings are unauthorised and should be disputed on this basis. Whilst it would be nice if the merchant stopped the billing and responded to the OP's request, this is a matter between the OP and their CC. It's for the CC to take further.

    2) IF the OP did authorise the CPA, then agreed it is for the OP to cancel the authority with the merchant. Once this has been done, further charges are a matter of dispute with the CC. Obviously the OP should try and cancel according the method given by the merchant (if is reasonable). But if this fails, then that's the end of the matter. The CC can't just push it back on the cardholder saying they must go back to the merchant.
  • Theres actually a thread somewhere in the forum re teeth whitening scam (think it could be in praise, vent & warnings.

    hi

I'm new to this site and need all the advice I can get.

Earlier in October I purchased a product online NOT !!!!!! but TEETH WHITENER vain I know.I believed it was a one off purchase however I have come to realise via my credit card statement and by contacting the company that the product was actually a monthly subsciption. I have also realised that this is from America.

I have set in motion trying to cancel the whole thing via my credit card company and the company I purchased the product from. They emailed me a link in order to complete the cancellation however the link will not complete the task as it requires a State; a ZIP code and a valid telephone number.

When I purchased the original product, my country of origin was asked for and the electronic form that was required to be filled in, was changed so that it represented a form that details such as post codes, counties etc. could be filled in.

I have tried to recontact the company but to no avail, there is no email address to correspond with.

has anybody had a simular problem and can offer advice please

    Eddie
