Confused at best/options!

Hi all,
We're shortly moving into a rural village where Freeview tells us we can't get it (not true - my FIL a hundred yards away gets it but he's the other side of the hill) so not much point in putting up a new digital aerial. We can't get Virgin I don't think, so are our only options Sky (expensive!) or Freesat? Is there anything else?
(We also need broadband, a phone line connected & landline but considering these separately first)
Thanks
C xx

If you have no freeview or cable as I do sky or freesat are your only options. If your new property has an aerial in might be worth trying to see if you can get freeview as there is not really such a thing as a digital aerial. Why do you say "not true" as if that hill is between you and the transmitter it could easily stop you getting freeview, what does the freeview site say about your FILs postcode.

Freeview says my FIL also can't get it. Yes he gets a few problems in bad weather, but not often. What is the BT Vision+ - is that cable?
We're looking at £80 with Sky (inc phone & bband) as we would want TV in two bedrooms also (plus I couldn't resist the movie channels :o ) and it's a little prohibitive. Freesat doesn't provice Dave which my OH and I are addicted to, so a difficult choice, lol.

BT Vision is Freeview with knobs on. If you can't get Freeview, you won't get Vision either. If the hosue you are moving to has an aerial, can you borrow FIL's Freeview box and check for yourself? It's the only sure way of knowing if you can get it or not.

Could you ask any of your soon-to-be neighbours if they get Freeview?

If that's the case I agree with Fifer definitely worth a try.

There are lots of B&Bs in the village advertising the fact they've got Freeview so yes, it's worth a try. We'll take a portable & box with us when we start moving stuff in the weekend after next - just trying to think of options if it doesn't work!
In what case would we know if we just needed to upgrade the aerial?

The best bet would be to speak to a reputable independent local aerial installer. They are likely to know the lie of the land and how likely you will be to get decent reception with an aerial upgrade. However, if any close neighbours get it, it's likely you will too.

Thanks - yes my OH was trying to call the chap who did my FIL's aerial upgrade but on looking at a local freebie magazine from the area this installers advert stated that Freesat was the best for this particular village due to weak freeview reception.
If freesat got the same channels as Freeview then it'd be a no-brainer!
Thanks for help all, will try Freeview first!

If the signal's going to be marginal, or you're going to need a really good aerial, it'll likely be cheaper to go with Freesat, and you don't need to worry about whether it'll work or not.

Freesat does not have Dave,Channel 1, Five USA, Fiver, Sky 3, Channel 4HD amongst other channels that are available on both Freeview and as subscription on Sky.

I know, that's what I meant. If it did get those channels then I'd just go for Freesat.
Almillar - no chance without Dave or FiveUSA - our two most watched channels!
