Whats the fashion for ceilings nowadays; artex or no artex?

I am just about to have my cracked, wobbly bedroom ceiling sorted out. What sort of finish you you suggest in my 1930's bungalow??

I run a Miantenece Company and the plasterers I use spend abpout half their time skimming over artex. No one wants it back save for a few die hards.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

What do you actually like??? I wouldn't ever think of a ceiling as a fashion thing. If your renovating to sell, then go plain as artex is not everybodys taste. If you plan to stay there for a while, why not have what you want and not worry about what other people think.0

No artex! (shudders)
If there is anything I hate more than anything it's artex. How to make a ceiling look lower!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Ok, so if artex is soooo out of fashion, why do they still artex all the celings in new-builds?
I dont especially like artex, but i worry about a plain ceiling cracking.
And coving? Is this in or out??
Its not to sell, i plan to live here forever0 -
There's no such thing as fashion - only good taste.
I've got loads of ceiling cracks and I don't care.
The ones on my walls I just cover with paintings.
NO artex - please!"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0 -

Really? Not in the ones I work in they don't! Plasterboard & skim, neutral paint (if any at all).0 -
Ok, maybe not BRAND new builds, but all of the last 3 houses i have lived in had artexed ceilings and were under 20 years old.
Gonna go for plain, and paper down the line if required, thanks.
But to cove or not to cove??0 -

I'd only cove if it was a high ceiling or it genuinley suited the period style of the property. In anything younger than 1930s, it means probably not.
Andrewb's looks better without it. I agree much biggerEverything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Up to 5 years or so ago, artex was still being used. the reason is that artexing is cheaper than skimming, plus artex in mew houses is never painted - its white anyway so they save the cost of painting the ceilings.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0
