wireless enabling pc!

I've had a desktop pc for a while now which never gets used due to having a laptop. was just wondering if anyone knows how i can make the pc wireless so that i can put it in a different room? the pc is currently upstairs where the internet modem is, however, we want to move it downstairs where it can be used. Looking for the simplest way possible please? Also have the internet modem plugged into the pc with wireless router, so where would internet plug into if not in back of pc?? thanks.

Yup I'd recommend checking for a spare PCI slot and getting a cheap (£7 ish) PCI card and dropping it in the back.

PCI cards are marginally more difficult to install (you have to open the PC case and remove ONE screw), but much more reliable once installed and don't share USB bandwidth with other USB things you might have in use and would slow everything down.

Some PCI cards have a 'remote' design of antenna where its on a long wire and can be set away from the case for better reception if you think that'll be an issue.

Just get a wireless USB dongle. No need to go inside the computer, and if its OEM, will probably have a warranty seal which would be voided. Plug and play all day!!:T

Search on ebay for "wireless usb adapters". They are also called dongles.
  • Also, your modem just needs to be connected to your router in order to work. It doesn't need to be connected to a pc, unless that pc requires internet, and has no wireless capabilities.

I have had no problem using adapter.
me neither; i think it's just a question of reliability perhaps ; some people here prefer the option of a PCI card. (see linked thread above).

ive tried unplugging the modem from the pc before and having it just connected to the router but it never seems to work. any suggestions please??
  • When you say it never seems to work, do you just mean on that pc that you disconnected it from?

If it had its wireless enabled, then any wireless devices would still be able to connect.
