Turn it around - who moves out of a house leaving items behind but without having received a penny of the money or even a signed document stating the buyer even wants the items at all?Who moves into a house not knowing if a cooker is being left or not.
I would have taken all the stuff with me on completion day if I hadn't received payment. If the buyer then decided they wanted to buy the items at a later date then they could arrange to pick them up and pay cash.0 -

I quite agree, both sides made a mistake. My main point was one simple phone call after moving in would have sorted the mess out one way or another. It's just daft moving in and finding something you're not expecting and ignoring it.It's someone else's fault.0 -
The vendor is the one who has made the error and is making a mountain out of a molehill. It was their responsibility to check their completion statement if they had completed the FF list with requests for payment for items. They should have also asked their sol before completion for confirmation of what the buyer wanted to have. They left the items in the end - maybe in 'good faith' - but quite honestly unless these are highly valuable items - why bother chasing this??? They obviously didn't need the items and if they want them so much just let them have them. They will soon forgot about the money as my personal hunch is they are just being greedy and maybe are peeved their own vendors took some items. To the vendor of the OP - you win some, you lose some...move on.0

Probably a bit late now, but I would have denied any knowledge of the items even being there. Simply saying that it was empty when you got there and were happy and believe the matter to be closed. A month has passed therefore neither side should be able to now claim something is "missing" or is "additional" to what should have been there.0

Have you tried to find out the price the items that were left cost new? The £1000 could be the cost to the seller to replace the left items with brand new replacements, or the price they paid for the items brand new. I doubt the seller would go to court as they could be asked to produce receipts for all the items, if they can and the total cost is £1000 I doubt any court would award £1000 as the items are classed as second hand.
Could the seller have bought the items to improve the look of the property, in the hope of attracting a buyer and have bought them on credit? If they have and haven't paid them off they cannot sell them, as they do not own them.Someone please tell me what money is0 -

People leave junk behind when they move all the time!
I agree but it's still daft to ignore something left behind that you weren't expecting. As I've said before one simple phone call and all problems go away. Two wrongs don't make a right, plain and simple. It's someone else's fault.0 -
nine months have passed, on Friday we received a letter from the sellers solicitors asking for the money!!! what a joke!! We havent heard anything since our last letter to them in October!!. I have contacted the Legal Ombudsman to complain. Not only did they ask for the money they said we have to pay in 7 days or face court proceedings!! bully tactics if you ask me.....surely after all this time they dont have a leg to stand on????0

Just to add to that, most of the stuff they left we have now got rid of anyway0
