What torch to get?

Can anyone suggest a decent torch? Our 'cheep & cheerful' torch (it wasn't that cheep, can't remember the make though) is not cheerful anymore having failed n-th time, and I need to get a new one.
It is just for having a torch around the house and using it to go outside at night (no light at the back of the house or the garage), for when the power fails, etc.
I remember seeing some torches that basically sit plugged in the socket, so you are sure that the batteries are not 'gone' for that one time when you get a power cut or decide that you have to have that jam from garage now! I can't see any like that online today. (I am not talking about safe-t-light, that has bad reviews as the torch - I do not need a night light).
Any torch that is powerful enough to actually light up what are you trying to look, without being cumbersome, and can be recharged with the plug (so I don't need to keep a stock of batteries), maybe a charge indicator or something?
What do you have?...

have 3 maglites (2 small and a large one) and a Petzl LED head torch. All have standard rechargable batteries. Head torch lasts for a very long time between charges but doesn't give out a huge amount of light.
Last power cut we had I used my mobile to locate a torch and then used that
if you want one with a docking station just try google "rechargable torch":

Get a Cree torch they are brilliant( no pun intended) They have led lamps encapsulated in a clear plastic which acts as a lens. When I saw my son's new torch I could not believe how good it was. Google "Cree" for more information.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Having an outside light would be recommended because they can be useful. I have one which has a PIR sensor and can be overridden to stay on by switching on and off and on again.
I was looking for a torch myself because the last one I purchased lasted about 13 months and then the batteries failed and it wouldn't hold a charge......I got what I paid for I suppose. I had a Black and Decker rechargeable which lasted about 20 years and the battery only failed about a year ago.
For your torch how about one of these? A bit expensive for a torch but LED torches last a long time and go a very long time between charges. This one can also auto switch itself on in the event of a power failure if it is connected to the mains.

I love my shaky torch - no batteries and no winding up! It has an led light so it's pretty bright, I got mine at Tesco for about £3, it's £4.50 on Amazon...

I bought a Uni-Com wind-up LED torch in wilKinsons for under a fiver about sixth months ago. (Not the one with the solar panel).
I've been very impressed with it. It puts out a lot of light and I have only wound it up the once when I first bought it.
I have been using it now and again ever since and it's kept it's charge for 6 months on one wind-up!0 -
