    How big is your house?

    4/5 bed 3 storey.

7 adults in total, dishwasher on about 3 times a day, w/machine on about 3 times a day, other half who is the biggest cold blow around, heating on all day everyday, all lights left on to make the rooms look cosy, heating left on when she goes out so her beloved cats don't get cold, tv left on so her beloved cats don't feel lonely when they are on their own, need I go on? :(

Cats feel the cold? So why do they go out at night then?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Good evening: gas 7049 kWh, electricity 1926 kWh per annum.....condensing combi, shower on mains, HW pipe work lagged to Part L, double glazing, cavity wall, loft insulation @ 270 mm, low energy lighting, thermostat set where we want it when we want it, slippers and jumpers when appropriate.

Take advantage of the info available from the EST

Keep track of your energy usage on http://www.imeasure.org.uk/ There's a MSE carbon club too, so you can compare your actual usage with those of us who are in it.

And whats the point in them having fur coats? They may aswell have plastic macs.

And for the record, I don't believe global warming exists.

  • I've yet to do a costing on gas ..and how it works out ..
i can tell you exactly what i use in paraffin ..

i do know this though ..

During the months from November to April ..i needed to burn it 24/7 on constantly...this i found after a few years was the most cost effective way to heat my house
..kept my house at a constant 18 -19 degrees.........and used about £400 of bulk price paraffin .which per kw is about 6.5 pence

So i would imagine that firing something up only between certain hours ..it would burn more gas to bring the house up to temperature rapidly ..weather more so than just leaving the the stat on say 18.5c 24/7 i don't know ..cause i ain't got gas yet ..

but i would imagine it would be the same as what Ive found with the paraffin ..

its like you accelerating up the motorway at max to reach the top speed of your car in the quickest time .uses lots of petrol.

or put another way .going on a journey that would normally take 24 hours in your car ...but you're doing it in two hours....at 150 mph .

or like using a slow cooker ..saves energy

I have a feeling that once the house has reached the stat temperature then left on 24/7...then the boiler will just tick over to keep the house temperature stable....and save on fuel bills.

    all the best.markj

Right! And I leave my oven on 24/7 too. That way it comes up to temperature more quickly and my food cooks more quickly. And I'm sure I save on fuel bills too!

In that case the bills sound reasonable.

I must be the meanest cat owner on earth as I leave mine in an unheated kitchen overnight as they keep us awake otherwise. They haven't complained yet. :)

Thats the real way to look after them. Ours are now so spoilt I fear they have lost all natural instincts :)
