Getting Sky+ ?

I'm currently paying £32/month for Sky, with just a regular Sky box.

I'm thinking of cancelling & signing up again, because I'm annoyed with all these offers offering new customers the same package I have for £19/month, plus a Sky+ box.

If I buy a Sky+ box from them, I have take Sky multi-room or HD at an extra £10 per month, AND pay a set up cost of £50-60. Multi-room is useless to me because we only have (space) for 1 TV. I'm not convinced HD is on enough channels yet to make it worth an extra £10/month.

If I cancel & sign up again, I'll get a Sky+ box for £30 installation, plus only be paying around £21-22 (with the extra packages) per month rather than £32, AND I can refer my parents so they get £50 M&S vouchers. I know Sky will raise the price and keep raising it as per their usual tricks, but I think it will take a while to get back up to £32.

Cancelling the contract isn't a problem since I've been with them for more than 12 months, & if they make a fuss I can get my housemate to sign up in his name instead (it's a shared house).

What I want to know is,

- Has anyone tried this & can offer advice/opinions?
- Is there some kind of catch I've not considered???

Is it a new customer only offer?

I ask, because cancelling and signing up again with the same name and postcode does not make you a new Customer.
  • I believe it is a new customer only offer, however would my housemate signing up make 'me' a new customer? Would be his name, DOB, card details etc.

Interesting question, I suppose that would be new, lucky you! They would be more suspicious of Mrs Harrowing signing up after Mr Harrowing had just quit.:rotfl:

Best to train your housemate to deny any knowledge of you if asked ;)

Might not need to cancel jenni.

I was in a similar situation, had an old sky+ box, was starting to give me probs and saw the offer of free HD box for new customers taking multiroom.

Now multiroom would be of some use to me, so called them and told them I wanted the multi room, free HD box and install but wasnt prepared to take the HD package. Like you they wanted me to pay for the box as not a new customer etc. Gave them the option of having my continued subscription with the additional £10 multiroom tacked on or nothing at all. Installed 2 days later ;)

Then original box gave up the ghost 2 weeks later. Bit of negotiation and they had the engineers on their way with a replacement box at no charge.

You have the power, especially when outwith the 12 months. However it is the cancellation team who will do the deal you want.

sky plus doesnt actually cost anything , if the equipment is in place , get a second hand sky plus box some cable and a new lnb for your dish , then phone sky and tell them to change your signal to enable sky plus

I rang Sky last year and said I wanted to cancel - I told them that Virgin offered m e a free V+ box and a better package (I can't even get Virgin where I live). They then offered me a free Sky + box and gave me free sports for 3 months! Give it a go, they can only say no.

  • Thanks for all your help everyone, I'll call them up & see what they say before actually cancelling!

I vaguely remember them saying last time that I wouldn't be counted as a new customer (was in another housemate's name and she left so I had to sign up again because they refused to change the name and details on the account), and at the time I was like 'ummm ok, I don't see why it matters', but it might be because of things like this.
