I have just bought a San Francisco smartphone and unlocked it. I don't want to use more money than I need to connecting it to the internet. I have have ensured that it does not allow data and have yet not set up a general APN although I have set a APN for MMS. I assumed that if I only connected the phone to the internet…

Thanks for all the replies. It looks like if I have data off it should not connect to the internet via the mobile sim...i.e. I will not be charged.

On this basis is it now safe to set up a new APN for my new provider? Perhaps my emails were originally downloaded via the MMS APN!
