Stopping Mobile from Connecting to Internet

I have just bought a San Francisco smartphone and unlocked it.
I don't want to use more money than I need to connecting it to the internet.

I have have ensured that it does not allow data and have yet not set up a general APN although I have set a APN for MMS. I assumed that if I only connected the phone to the internet via Wi-fi I would not be charged any money off my PAYG balance.

I switched off Wi Fi on the phone last night and I was still able to access my new emails. Was I charged for this off my PAYG balance?

So how do how stop it? I thought the only way the SIM could connect to the internet was via a APN. The only APN I have set up is for MMS.

Were they new emails or were they just old ones which it had downloaded while you were on WiFi?

If there is no APN set up it's hard to see how it could have connected.

It seems the San Francisco is an Android phone so as suggested you can download an app/widget which will allow you to turn 3g data on and off. Alternately if you just uncheck the Mobile network box in the Wireless and networks settings it can't use data SFAIK - certainly my HTC doesn't anyway.

Thanks. I had already switched data off but I am trying to work out what that really means. For example if you switch Wifi on and access the internet via your router you can download even if the data is switched off!

    Thanks for your reply.

I set up my email account on it last night and as soon as the account was set up it started downloading old emails even though Wifi was set to off and Data was set to off!.

This morning though it says 'unable to establish connection' for the email account so it looks like it sorted itself out!

Who is your PAYG SIM from? Can't you just check the credit balance?

The rate charged for data without a specific data tariff is frightening. It may be 'unable to establish connection' because it has chewed through all your credit. At typically > £1 per MB it wouldn't take long.

mobile data on a phone = data downloaded from a network usually chargable by your network or data capped .

as opposed to WiFi data downloaded via wifi card in phone from whatever wifi source home router mc donalds etc as free or free subscription wifi .

Flashed my phone to Android 2.2 yesterday downloaded basic over mobile network data as quick settings and appbrain . cost 30p
Today using quick settings mobile data is off and appbrain used to download twenty apps via home router = no charge .

Yes, I know it's frightening and I have read of a few people getting this phone and finding they had used £10 without even using the internet:eek:
I can check the balance quite easily but I would just like to know how the connection works.

yes from experience of my desire wifi is free and you dont get charged for it and when data is off it generally means data is OFF
