When it comes to a cardealer and their opinion of what is and isn't a good car, it isn't just about what the car drives like, but rather what it sells like.
A lot of cardealers would happily drive a particular car themselves because it is unloved in the trade, and so loses a lot of money, so is cheap to buy.
How many Golf Plus's have you seeen on the road? Exactly, almost none, why? Because it looks a bit awkward and dumpy, and could only be less in demand if you bought it in Beige with a red interior.
The basic mechanicals are good, though VW build quality is over rated.
The Golf Plus is also one of the worst depreciators in the range, making it a good used buy, but it will never be in great demand, this is the simple reason why some traders view them with disdain.
But if you like the look of it and it ticks all the boxes then buy away, it is a better bet than a Chevrolet Tacumo.
I don't see anything wrong with putting function before fashion, there are lots of cars that aren't fashionable and therefore are worth less than they should be.
Mondeo Mk3 anyone, a good car but bland, making it a true bargain, and if anybody would be willing to admit it. Almost as good as a 3 Series BMW for driving dynamics.
I wouldn't buy a Golf PLus to sell on, but would have one as a well priced cheap family car.
Here is an other example, the Toyota Prius doesn't drive that well, though the new one is apparently better, but they tend to be a good seller, at least in the south east as they are seen to have environmental credentials for the socialist elite and those aspiring to be the socialist elite. Because of this demand they are a good seller, hold value well and a dealer would happily have one in stock, though probably not for his own use, due to them being a bit crap.0
