Did you mean to say just that, or did you mean that the pc is hanging/freezing at that stage?

its hanging / freezing at that stage, it won't let us go any further.

No, we have tried that. The message we got then was "install from boot cd" which we don't have !

Check that the original mem is seated properly, check that hard drive is connected properly. Try remove the battery (flat watch type) for a few minutes then replace it. If you have more than one stick of ram /mem try with just one stick.

you shouldn't need any software or CDs to install or change memory.

not entirely sure what you are trying to install? memory comes with no software.

Basically you open the PC > put in new stick(s) > boot PC up and thats it?
(perhaps with a quick hop into system properties to check its seeing the right amount of RAM)

that error message relates to the hard disk? did you disturb/do anything with the hard disk when changing the RAM/memory?

More to the point, did you switch off, unplug the PC and take steps to discharge static before installing?

ok, we tried again without the new ram and it worked. Put the ram back in and its freezing again on the same screen as before.:mad:

Do you think it could be a problem with the ram ? We took advice from here and bought it from crucial.

Thanks for all your advice so far

The BIOS is telling me the ram is installed but the pc just will not boot up, it's freezing at "verifying DMI pool data" ?

Get SIW - http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html the freeware version, use siw list on left hand pane , hardware/memory to find out what type mem you have and max and how many slots. Also the motherboard model.
