Oh yes, there was something 'special' about some of the scents wasn't there. They used to do a face cream, very very highly perfumed and my mother swore it gave her a migraine so I used to use it. It spread and smelt like a very sweet mayonnaise, oh, those were the days!

For a short time about 10 years ago though early Avon bottles were going for lots of money, really serious moneyQUOTE]

yeah i think she may have been the nutter that bought them all, and is now trying to recoup her losses!!!!!!!

I find the way things go in and out of fashion so interesting.

It wasn't only Avon bottles that used to fetch a good price, look at Wedgwood jasper ware or even beannie babies, at one time they were worth oodles of money now you can't give them away.

I spend a fair bit of time in auction houses and you see people bringing in their items for sale , so many times the auctioneer even declines to take them in as they are worthless, and you get some poor confused person standing there saying 'but I bought these as an investment for my retirement..I spent thousands' and the auctioneer has to break it to them that they would end up with pence at best after commission fees as their collectables are no longer fashionable.

    It is actually a shame

The other thing that I've seen people reduced to tears over (and that is just the blokes) is sci fi collectables. I've been approached for advice about selling collections that maybe cost £7- £8 thousand pounds over 20 + year s now reduced to a few hundred pounds.

    I'm on a roll now...

My dad spent a great deal of money over 70+ years collecting stamps, they were always intended to give the grandchildren a good start in life. I have stored them for over 2 years now and recently spoke to an auctioneer about selling them, her estimate..£60 as a bulk lot before commission. Apparently she can't even guarantee they will sell as no one buys stamps anymore.

    Soolin,

I think you may appreciate this valuation from Antiques Roadshow:

Several times, I have heard of people collecting top end 35mm cameras, convinced that because they are worth only 10% of their original retail prices, they simply have to go back up in value.

I'm not convinced - obsolete technology will always have its enthusiasts, but it never regains mass appeal - as anyone with a vinyl collection knows only too well! :(

    Brilliant thank you.

I saw a box of very nice old cameras go on first bid of £20 last month, the auctioneer even struggled to get that

She's selling the baby clothes for £700, but can't be bothered to list what is included, post a pic, or say how many you would get! Ridiculous.

Unsold Item Fees for last 30 days on goofbay are OVER £400!!
I think this may be because Goofbay isn't 'clever' enough to work out which items were listed over the free listing weekends.

Out of interest, I plugged my own ID in and found £60 worth of unsold items fees over 90 days.

These fees simply don't exist, as all my recent listings have been on FLWs.

I found an old photography magazine when I was having a clear out the other week, 1950's. Lovely mag and its full of ads for what were then very expensive cameras. Being a photographer I thought I quite fancied something from that era so got on ebay. Bloody hell I nearly died. Certain models are through the roof. Time to swot up on which camera's make the money I think ;)
