Seller says item destroyed after I'd won

I won an item that was pickup only. I had previously messaged the seller to see if they would ship via courier if I paid the cost as I was a long distance from them. They gave the okay but after the auction ended my messages to attempt to pay and make arrangements for pickup were ignored for several days.
Eventually the seller replied claiming that whilst they were packing the item ( a large me2you limited edition soft teddy ) their dog had destroyed it :rotfl:
I dont believe that for a moment, why would you be packing up an item that hadn't even been paid for yet. It's obvious they don't want to let it go for the price the auction ended at.
I'm resigned to not getting my item, how do I deal with ebay now as it's still in my list of items I need to pay for.

Simple. You don't have to pay for it. I think theres also a way to open a dispute which will allow you and the seller to agree to cancel the transaction.

Why not ask for photographic proof? if you feel so strongly I would pay for it (if they refused to provide proof) and after a few days open an INR claim. I also wouldnt accept a mutual (agreement to cancel) if I thought they were scamming me.

More than likely they didn't destroy it they just didn't get the price they wanted

Personally I would pay via paypal (then they cant open a NPB on you). Then open an item not received after 7 days and you will be refunded. Then leave appropriate feedback

I would refuse any mutual that way they don't get their fees back, Ebay can do without sellers like this.

How petty. Gee, eBay needs more folk like you!

OP -- He wanted more money and made an excuse because he ain't selling it to you. Mark it as "payment sent" to get it off your "to pay" list. Then forget about it.

No it's not petty, the seller should have listed with a higher starting price if they wanted more for it.

The selller is responsible for their own listings and if they are too dumb to work the above out then they are obviously TSFE.

Personally I would pay for it like others have said then open a INR. This will prevent the seller from open a dispute against you for not paying for it.

Was courier listed as a postage method or was it collection only? Maybe the seller didn't want the hassle of using a courier.

personally i wouldnt leave feedback straight away, i would keep an eye on his listings and see if it pops up again then leave feedback

I'd do this too, it does sound like he's pulling a fast one.. kind of reminds me of the most obviously fake excuse at school.. 'oh the dog chewed my homework' :think:

Sounds to me as though he wanted more for it than he got, so many people dont think to start the price at the minimum they want for an item its ridiculous.

On the other hand speaking as someone who has 2 labradors, I know how much dogs LOVE ripping toys to pieces given half a chance:rotfl:so its not titally impossible the dog damaged it, but then it shouldnt have been where the dog could get to it anyway

What ebay doesn't need is sellers like this one.
If they aren't prepared to sell it for the end price they should have started it at the least they would accept for it.
OP don't accept a mutual cancellation on it as they can then get their fees back & you can't leave feedback. Unless of course they send a pic clearly showing that it was definitely that item that was destroyed by the dog.

Yes you can...you both can if it's a mutuall withdrawal.
