    My sister and brother-in-law recently had thier PC taken down by 'something nasty' along these lines! They don't know what it was , or where it came from sadly!
    Luckily an IT savvy friend was able to rescue most of thier files .. which was damn lucky since a back-up routine they were using was apparently useless.
    But it was a total re-format at the end of the day.

    Yep, another in lesson in: actually checking and verifying the integrity of the backup.
