My sister and brother-in-law recently had thier PC taken down by 'something nasty' along these lines! They don't know what it was , or where it came from sadly!
Luckily an IT savvy friend was able to rescue most of thier files .. which was damn lucky since a back-up routine they were using was apparently useless.
